Hi Guys
Having trouble networking our home machines.
Both are running winXP home edition
I have a feeling its to do with the security policies and granting user permissions but I cant seem to find where to do that in XP
I have looked in the Administrative tools folder but there’s nothing in there for user settings or granting security permissions.
What bugs me is that until recently the network was working fine, then it just went down and I can’t get it up and running again.
Both computers can see themselves in my network places, but not each other. I have checked all the usual culprits, cables are ok, hubs fine network cards are working. The main problem is that I am using my machine to share the internet connection and nipper is doing his nut as he has assignments to finish and cant get online.
Any ideas folks? Fell free to add me to messenger if you think you can help
Thanks
John
I know it's a pain but have you tried re-doing the network??..... When we had a P2P network ours used to drop occasionally and I just used to set it up again... It only takes 10 minutes and you are all up and running again...
We have since upgraded to a wireless network and its much easier being able to log on to the net without worrying about the main PC being switched on biggrin

Hi Judy, you can have up to 100 meters of cable, so no problem there, as for your hub, if it is wireless capable, then there is nothing stopping you using wireless network cards.
John
if I need to know anything about xp I go here
always find the info I need biggrin

Okay, first things to check is the cable, if you are linking the computers back to back (ie, no router etc - just a cable from one pc to another) then you HAVE to use whats called "Twisted Pair" CAT5 cable, CAT5 is the normal cable we all use on networks, but the Twisted Pair the version of cable that handles back to back networking. If you dont have this type of cable thats prob the first problem.
Secondly, in windows to set yourself on a network you need to give yourself an IP, Workgroup name, Subnet and DNS IP's (so u can get on the net). Which can be found under "Network Neighbourhood > View Network Connections" then goto the properties of your network connection name.
You must remember that each PC will need a different IP address but same Subnet... heres an example.
Machine 1:
------------
IP: 0.1
Subnet: 0
DNS: ???.???.???.???
???.???.???.???
Machine 2:
------------
IP: 0.2
Subnet: 0
DNS: ???.???.???.???
???.???.???.???
I've left the DNS blank as thats supplied to you from your ISP.
Anyway, thats the general jist... yet again i've written an essay! Anyway, goodluck!
Regards,
Ben

Ok, well the network is back up and running, :bounce:
Big hurrah from nipper who is now bugging me to play network games at every opportunity rolleyes . But still no internet connection for his PC, evil have repaired the network bridge but cant sort the internet sharing as I cant find the appropriate application to do it, the windoze help file won't open. banghead
So looks like we’re half way there at least.
Thanks again all :rose: :rose: :rose: :rose:

Techie help need ed here too......I am using a Mercury 10/1000Mbps for LAN Ethernet interface and using cables. I have been told I can use the same router if I obtain a wireless access point, is this true. Also can anyone tell me the maximum length of cable run permitted with such a system (I am using 10 metres at the moment and this is fine for the two rooms I am using but I want to extend it to another room which will need about 15 or 16 metres. Will this be OK ???? Sorry to hijack the original thread.
Judy

Judy,
As mentioned before you can run up to 100 metres of cable, there are some caveats but for 15-16 metres you won't have a problem.
If you obtain a Wireless Router you can plug it into your Mercury Router and you should have wireless capability. The Wireless Router which is the easiest to set up is a Belkin. Whatever you do please secure it otherwise the world and his wife will be able to use your connection (not good when the Old Bill comes knocking to ask you to "accompany them down to the station" for sending terrorist type emails!!).
OK, well after wasting 4 days of my holiday, its all finaly working :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
And all because Katie wanted her own machine to play on by herself
oh, and nippers assignments of course.
Had to re-install windoze in the end evil   so lost everything and spent an entire day putting it all back rolleyes
It seems to be working really good now, so question is...................... do i install SP2 or not???
all oppinions welcome confused: ohhhhh could be a poll
"SP2 or not SP2 that is the question" :jagsatwork:
love ya guys muuuuuuuuuuwwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaa hump passionkiss :rose:

All CAT5 is twisted pair, the term I believe you're looking for is a crossover cable.

If you are running Norton firewall, or similar you need to check that you have given permission for the other computer to connect to the internet through the gateway computer.
You can change all the other settings you like - but if there is a firewall blocking your son's access nothing other than changing the sittings in Norton will change this! confused
