Sorry, don't agree here, if we ever decided to buy our own home it would only to give us a little security and to be able to leave something to our kids.
Tony wink

Sadly it won't because you'll have to sell your house to pay for your care in old age... currently if you have less than £21,000 in assets you do not have to pay a bean towards your care- anything over and it is used up to the £21K level...
Let's say house is paid for... worth £200K... you both need care... £1000 a month each for home care... in eight years that sum is eaten up... I think the days of leaving things to the kids has long gone... unless you are going to be good enough not to linger on... what a society we live in! evil sad
You only have to pay towards the cost at this level i.e. it is subsidised, if you have under £8,000 then ALL your care (be it social care or care home fees) is paid for. And assets do not include your house (if you own it) if you or your partner is still living in it. It is just savings, cash etc excluding pensions state and personal
I find it so sad when people save frugally all their lives to have their savings eaten up in care home fees, where often their dignity is still stolen too alongside their hard earned money.

We were talking about this the other day, I was getting on my high horse because when you think about all the elderly people today, they've worked hard for what they've got, paid their taxes for years and saved hard. Then they have to sell up to secure their care? It's all wrong.
Someone once said to me they'd sell up at the age of 50 and go travelling round the world with their money then come back and rent rather than give the state any more of their hard saved money!
I think also there's something about if you have a lodger residing in the premises the house cannot be sold? not sure there tho.
well.... I'm council, and I'm scum, so there!

We own our home, but for how much longer can be anyones guess dunno The rising house prices and mortgages have seen our mortgage go up twice this year. We can't change as we're locked in with this one for another 18 months.
Someone told me the other day we are heading for another recession... that's scares me terribly

Try to get a new lender to pay the penalty on your old mortgage.
I am not sure if that has stopped now but companies were so keen to get your money they would do almost anything.
We own our property in a small cul de sac mortgage free now. We also worked bloody hard to get there. When we first moved in it was nearly all owner occupied, however now its nearly all rented out near us. As a generalisation I would have to say that people who rent do not care about the upkeep of the property or the gardens. We have had neighbours from hell many times in the past few years ...people who threw used nappies into the front garden, 1 guy who let his dog roam and mess all over our garden and the same guy who terrorised an elderly deaf lady making her life a misery and even gunshots being fired. Now we have people who seem to think the back garden is a rubbish tip and have beds, furniture, fridges, freezers, and washing machines there. Not our problem? Oh yes it is as this is all facing onto a communal driveway which they often use for their fly tipping too. What can we do about it? SFA. The council won't do anything as its on private land. The tenants conveniently forget every word of English they ever knew if you try to chat to them and we don't know who the landlords are. We now have more rats than ever and strangely enough our property is devalued by this as well. A "good" tenant is rare in my view as we haven't seen one. And yes I do feel as an owner that I have more rights than the tenants as I have a lot of money invested in the property and they have none. However most of the time I do try to sort out problems amicably. But I'm not averse to abusing people if all else fails. The solution is in their hands. Clean up their act and then I will leave them alone. mad
Hi, Right or wrong, the problem has nothing to do with your neighbour owning their house or not.
