I'm sure most of you know today is Shrove Tuesday.. mmm pancakes!..
Here's the boring bit...
:jagsatwork: The reason that pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent is that the 40 days of Lent form a period of liturgical fasting, during which only the plainest foodstuffs may be eaten. Therefore, rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, sugar and flour are disposed of immediately prior to the commencement of the fast. Pancakes and doughnuts were therefore an efficient way of using up these perishable goods, besides providing a minor celebratory feast prior to the fast itself
... ok so I've bored myself innocent - now for the yummy bit!
I have to make my hubby and daughter loads every year but struggle with new filling ideas, any suggestions?
Will anyone be giving anything up for Lent??

hiya
I once made a batter mix, but made with coconut milk, and instead of single pancakes, they were layed on each other in a mold to form a a nice pudding which was complimented with ice cream.
I`m sure i saw the recipe in an Indian cook book but cant for the life of me think who it was, but it was damn nice to eat, and i would love to do it again.
I would now have to do it with gluten free flour though, and i dont know if it would be as nice but i`ll try.

It does tend to make a mess of the sandwich toaster though. redface
You can't beat the traditional way and I'll be having mine like that today biggrin
Try filling them some vanilla ( sorry I'll wash my mouth out :gagged: ) ice cream and fresh strawberries ( on offer in Tesco right now wink ) on the top drizzled with fresh cream
Or even better, soften, but not melt, the ice cream and spread it in between each pancake then top with fresh fruit and maple syrup. Yummy!!!
Calories? What calories? dunno

I personally like the traditional ones, I've just had a text of Mr Jay, and he's said he wants "loads and loads!" pig!, I quite like the strawberries and cream idea  and as for calories today.. :uhoh: will address that tommorow!
Hey Sassy are you on commission for Tesco or what? innocent
Just back from Sainsbury's procuring eggs and lemons (goes against traditional idea of using up storecupboard ingredients I know - ty for that Jaymar glad to hear some people actually know the religious reason behind such commercially celebrated days  ) but I am a purist and shall be decorating my pancakes with lemon and sugar only.
I always do mine thin, but MIL did them last week really thick and they were yummy, very filling and saved her standing there making loads! Shall adopt said practice this evening.
pink x
I dont normally like pancakes, but after hearing all these yummy suggestions, I think I may nip down to Tesco!!

any other suggestions?
Personally, I like mine with fresh oranges, but having lived in Holland, I have grown rather partial to bacon, cheese, mushroom and onion pancakes. I'm told that ginger and cream is nice too!

Mmmm I'm defo going with the fruit idea, whether it be oranges or strawberries, I'm a bit into my fruit at the minute.. mmm
well... living in Brittany, crepes are a serious event all year round!!
Try sprinkling with castor sugar over strawberries and then drizzle some cognac over the top of the rolled up pancakes. A quick pour of cream and...
viola... cardiac arrest on a plate!
enjoy!
