Hi,
Just interested to know what others think of the Gordon Brown cry for more patriotism to be shown with a 'Britain Day'.
Personally I feel this is just an attempt by Mr Brown to buy himself some popularity in advance of the inevitable demise of Tony Blair. After all, is Gordon not part of the same system that hampers the celebration of patriotic events such as St George’s day and discourages the displaying of national flags on public service vehicles/buildings?
John
I nearly skipped over this one - but it does raise a question I feel is more interesting...
What does it mean to be British?
dunno

Depends if you mean British or English?
anyone can be British so long as you can get a British pass port, you don't even have to be born in this county, as for English well that different, not matter where your born your still from your country of oragin and being from another nationality and being born in this country does not and never will make you English.
I just wonder how we as a nation could celebrate Britain Day (and it mean anything) if there is no unified answer as to what it means to be British.

I think history will show us as a superpower fallen from grace and slightly trampled on by others. For a while we pushed the envelope of science, technology and literature whereas now, I get the feeling, we only merit the occasional blip on the screen.

Maybe so banlwales but when i think about the torrent of cultures we have in this country.. i cant help feeling that we keep swinging from on extreme to the other.
One minute were asked to embrace & respect other cultures by not embracing our own for fear of offence to them... must i mention the tradtional British Xmas? - the list can go on!
& now its brakes on... haul out the St George & Union Jack coz it now it's time to make it fashionable again!
hey... i agree with PoloLady... anuva bank holiday BRING IT ON!

I think this is another post I will refrain from.........politics ? very dodgy ground rolleyes :P
Jude

Me too...... don't think im clever enough to comment on this one!
My only comment is
I now class myself as Devonian, and just that.
If the politicians are meant to represent the English / British members of this country, then i'm not one of them.
evil
I agree with the Bank Holiday aspect but on another point, if British Day does come to fruition, does it mean it is now Govt policy (All parties not just the incumbent one) to stop apologising to every Tom, Dick and Harry around the world for the occasional balls ups this country made 200, 300, 400 + years ago, whilst never criticising the same countries for doing the same now and using the long gone British Empire as one big get out of jail card for cocking their own counties economies up.
Oops, rant time going into overdrive...normal service will be resumed as soon as possible. redface
One other point, if they do have it, it shouldn’t be held on Remembrance Sunday, there are plenty of other days left.

hmmmm..i see very dangerous ground ahead.
Don't forget that the British Isles has been a melting pot of cultures, creeds, languages and religons for a huge number of years. Now we tend to discuss and legislate rather than persecute and burn. Don't forget that the traditional xmas is pretty much a victorian thing and the guy in the red suit is a coca-cola invention. I, for one, don't envy the politicians...it must be a tricky course to steer.
Luckily we're all agreed that another bank holiday wouldn't go amiss..!!
biggrin
I'm not touching this one with a bargepole
.....funny though, how we 'remember' what it is to be proud of all that which is/was British on November 11th, but at best, would celebrate "Britsh Day" only because it could become a bank holiday. confused

much as there's a lot about this country to love....the moment im aborad, im SO embarassed to be british when there's lads on the piss being total arseholes

Think I'm coming from the same place as Lissa here...
Except - I'm not British, or English - I'm Welsh! I've never, ever, thought of myself as British, and I think it's high time we dropped the whole malarkey, and just be proud of being Welsh / English / Scottish / Northern Irish while getting along with each other in a peachy fashion.
Probably too much to ask, but y'know, the simplest ideas are more often than not the best. Hey ho.
British day ! What a good idea, so we declare it a bank holiday and everyone can do b~~~~~all ! How typicaly British.
Actually the Brits are quite passionate about their identity. The English, Irish, Scots and Welsh all celebrate their own cultures quite well on the Saints Days.
I think everyone likes fireworks. So whatever they plan to do, there must be lots of fireworks.
Scottish and LUVVIN ITTTTTTTT! lol
remember Scots Welsh n Irish r only Brits when we r doing sumthing good ie, Andy Murray - Brit... but if he was rubbish he'd be a Scot!
and coming from a Goevrnment full of PC police.. who now do not allow the use of the word Blackboard in schools (its a CHALK board!!) and Numerous other idiotic changes that do nothing more than draw attention and further segragate people..
I DONT SEE IT HAPPENING ANYTIME SOON!
