If your 'puter is getting to the point of locking up the CPU is in serious danger. The worst part is that if it's only parboiled it'll get glitchy even after you've replaced the fan. In some ways it's far better to cook it properly (although this sometimes fries the motherboard as well).
Fans are less than a tenner & dead easy to fit. If you struggle and you're within easy reach of Manchester (confesses he's not lookd at the profile yet <shame>) I'll happily fit it for you without recourse to money or sexual favours.
BTW did you know us computer geeks have been voted more boring than Accounts? If that's not an interesting fact I don't know what is ;-)
