the company that bought SH are going to want to make money to at least cover the cost of running it, charging for membership is probably the easiest way for them to do that, especially as there are already the old members who, for the time being at least, have premium access to the site.

The charges are for new members, existing members get the first year free, the free membership will continue provided that certain criteria are met, the criteria has not been agreed yet but will be discussed with the moderators.

As a member for the last 12 month or so I think a lot of people have been attracted by the fact that this has been a genuinely free site, the only one that I've come across. But now that new members have to pay for certain services I think the numbers of new, active members will drop off, and once the 12 months free period for the original members has expired only a core of regulars will remain. Time will tell if this is for the benefit of the site?

It does... it states "resgistration is free" in exactly the same way all other sites are "free to join" however once you actually want to do anything, such as make contact... then its not free.. if it were then it would not make any money and wouldnt have been worth paying to purchase the site.
I actually think the site would probably make more money if it were to offer a one of life time membership for payment scheme as very few people, with only one notable swinger site exception, renew after a year so although it would still be a pay site it would be more likely to attract a greater number of new, hopefully genuine, swingers each month/year otherwise it will just become a sex site or stagnate in the same way that DnM's and DD's have with no real new advertisers who partisipate...
You can see the same stagnation with the old MSN comunities, without the chat rooms to lead new people, good and bad, into the comunity's to keep them active with new blood and banta, even if just a polite ticking off for newbes being to in your face and making mistakes, then people just drift away.
