Phone Fraud - Warning from the Police
>>
>> We have been advised of a telephone fraud currently in operation -
>> this applies to home and work telephones, landlines and mobiles.
>>
>> If you receive one of these calls, upon answering the telephone you
>> will hear a recorded message congratulating you on winning an all
>> expenses trip to an exotic location. You will then be asked to press
>> 9 to hear further details. If you press 9 you will be connected to a
>> premium rate line that costs approximately £20 per minute. Even if
>> you disconnect immediately, it will remain connected for a minimum of
>> 5 minutes costing around £ 100.
>> The
>> final part of the call involves you being asked to key in your
>> postcode and house number, which has other serious consequences.
>> After a further 2 minutes you will receive a message informing you
>> that you are not one of the lucky winners. The total bill by then
>> will be £100.
>>
>> Since the calls are originating from outside the UK, BT and other
>> telephone companies are left relatively powerless to act. The only
>> safe solution is to HANG UP before the message prompts you to dial 9,
>> even safer HANG UP on any unsolicited 'free offer calls'.
>>
>> There is another scam operating on mobile phones as well. A missed
>> call comes up. The number is 0709 xxx xxxx, the last four numbers may
>> vary, but certainly the first four will remain the same. If you call
>> this number back you will be charged £50 per minute.
>>
>> People have complained about their phone bills, once they have
>> realized the cost of the call, but apparently this is completely
>> legal.
>>
>> So beware, do not call back numbers beginning with '0709'.
Mods edit - I've amended the number you posted because SOMEONE will dial it out of curiousity!
Something similar to this has been reported before I think - possibly the same company involved?
This is just a variant on the american 809 area code email.

Whilst there are certain bits of it that may have some truth, most of it is just scaremongering and can be safely ignored.
Well I got the call two weeks ago on my answering machine - the voice was very hypnotic and said two or three times 'press 9 to claim a prize, just press 9, that's right, press 9 now'.
Of course I didn't, I phoned BT and learnt that it was a scam. But I can imagine some older people who would press 9 and not realise anything was amiss.
mad
I had a spate of them last year, mostly international calls advising me i had won a prize and/or press 9 so i phoned bt. They gave me some telephone numbers to call
Bt crank calls
Silent call guard
Telephone preference service
It takes about 4 days for them to become active (they are free calls) and last about a year.
Since then only one call has got through compared to 10/15 per day.
If anyone wants the numbers pm me or if I am allowed to publish them could a moderator let me know.....cheers
kaz xx
You can certainly post legitmate BT number and Telephone Preference Service (I registered and have only had that one call in over two years - no, I don't that I ONLY have had one call, I mean I've only had one unwanted call!!).
Also useful is the Mail Preference Service to cut down on unsolicited mail - it's great too!!
had a very similar message on ntl's answering service asking to press 7 for a holiday to disneyworld in florida, weird thing is I was sitting by the phone waiting for a call when it was received, yet the phone never rang,,I'd better not get billed for it or there'll be trouble at 't' mill

You own a Telecom's company!!!

I also have a 25% share in a telco, is it that unusual ???
i had that fucker the other day whenever i get them i put the phone down straight away its like the scratch cards you get in mags and u have to call to claim your prize anit it funny how youve always won somat??? the buggers should have their bollox chopped off(if they have a pair) mad :x :x :x :x :x
Well it could have been worse.......
You could own a 25% Share in K-Tel, they haven't recorded a profit, or profited from a record since the 70's lol
This sounds like rubbish - the 0709 part of it definitely is.
I have an 0709 number from yac - if you send a fax to it I receive it via email.
It costs about 35 pence a minute - not £60

So you want me to register for unwanted calls? That does not compute, captain.
It is not possible to be charged at such a high tarif on either Premium Rate or 070 numbers. This is quite a common urban myth that goes around.
If you are very concerned report it to ICSTIS..

You can register with the telephone preference service as well, but they are not very good at enforcing their regulations, so many companies especially, the dodgy ones will simply ignore them.

I have had a couple of the 'prize winning' calls answered by voicemail on my work number. I never heard of such a reverse charge capability before though.
i have had a few recoreded message phone calls saying i could have won a holiday etc, i usually just put the phone down cause i work oh the basis that noone give u anything for nothing and even if u ever do win anything u have to chase them up they don't call u :giggle:
