My personal preferences:
Black and white often gives a better effect than colour.
A view of a muscular (if one is available) back with a slight turn of the head to show a partial profile is VERY effective.
Avoid:
Any washing/ironing in the background - in fact any domestic untidiness.
Even non-matching bedding jars the senses and detracts from the intent. Also any flowery curtains or 1980's wallpaper.
Boxers round the knees - total image fail there.
Any view that is square on - always try to place the subject (whole body, limb, etc) at an angle to add interest.
Bits out - dangling or otherwise - God did not make male genitalia to be taken seriously.
Other suggestions:
A hat and tipping the head down works well to hide the face - better than fuzzing the picture like Crimestoppers.
Try to get someone else to take the pictures - it is really hard to take good pics of yourself.
Make sure you have brushed your hair, freshly done any shaving you normally do - although wet from the shower look is often very effective too.
