I'm not a religious person myself, but for one guy to affect so many people, he must be something amazing.
RIP.
I've heard there are plans for the next pope to be much older when appointed so he doesn't last as long, has anyone else heard similar rumours?
I hope he didn't buy a lottery ticket!! confused :? :? :? :?

They always choose them old for exactly that reason - it is not a rumour.
I am not a Catholic, but I do feel that Pope John Paul II made a difference. A genuine 'holy man' who brought great dignity to his pontificate. I always thought that the late Cardinal Basil Hume had that same air of piety about him. Such devotion is worthy of admiration, whether we share their faith or not.

Was he ever a member of SH?
He was John Paul, not Jean Paul..at least get his name correct FFS confused
For a reasonable summary of his life check this

and for those that would like a bet ( 2 more popes, one dying early, world ends 2012, etc )

Sorry I can't be a happier / sadder / more respectful soul, but being raised a Catholic and rejecting it and all the bullshit that rises up from human intervention all I have is the knowledge the world moves on.

According to the French he was Jean Paul.
To the Spanish, Juan Pablo
To the Italians, Giovanni Paulo
To his countrymen, Jan Pavel
etc etc.
Don't suppose it really matters since his real name was Karol Wojtyla
(Which I had to look up, and G beat me to it ;) )

Don't suppose it does matter really, but to Britishpeople he was always known as John Paul II
I always called him something else entirely , and like to think of him as Ol'Popey the Pontiff as a friendly gesture .

Thanks for that, thought I was going mad. Felt sure I'd seen it as Jean Paul. Nevermind, changed it anyway. Dealt alot with different deaths recently confused mostly biking related though so I guess it's to be expected. Not nice though.
Apparently, the favourites to replace him are all over 70, which is odd considering that JP2 is widely regarded as one of the most revered and influential Popes ever (Some are already formally referring to him as John Paul The Great)
You would think that with him as a precedent, they'd go for another young one who could last a long time.
Wasn't he responsible for appointing all those who might possibly replace him? That being the case, maybe he wanted someone old to replace him?
I think he was also known to some as" Big John" or am I getting confused with that guy in those cheesy movies in the 70s....???

Was hoping for a Black Pope this time , from an African nation . Or perhaps from London -unfortunately dont think London has the infrastructure for a Papism so Im betting on the Paris bid.
