ok. my final thoughts on this subject, then i'll say no more . . . if i've been rather too vocal of late, and offended, i apologise. and please do not think that i any way, shape, or form, have a postcount to defend. out of nearly 700 posts, i could point you, at a push, to about half a dozen i'm actually proud of.
that there has been so much debate on this indicates just how much people love the site, and for good or bad, how much it means to them. that we feel a need to defend the site, and it's members, is testament to that, because these members are our friends. wanting to see the place improved, rather than remain static, can only be a good thing. but there is a strong case to leave well alone. we found the site as it is, and stayed here cos it gave us something. we don't come here cos of the "look and feel" of the place. we come here cos it gives us something we can't get elsewhere. whatever that something is, is irrelevant. that something changes the longer we stay here.
wanting to be involved here, and feel included, is understandable, given the community this site has allowed to develop. judy says it's the "jewel on the net". i say, i pay my 16 quid a month purely so i can login here. i know nothing of the wider net beyond google and IRC (SH chatroom)
there is no real problem here that demands mark gives up his time to fix it.
there is the occasional random fire'n'forget poster, but we've all been there, done that, to a greater or lesser extent. the realisation that we're maybe going a bit OTT comes to us all, in time, and we're given that time usually, because it's an open, friendly place.
i'd be happy to see my postcount, joindate, previous posts etc disappear forever. i'd rather be judged on my input over the last few days, or weeks, than on my entire SH "career". i think that's what Rocky Horror was saying . . . . . if we use the site properly, as something that helps us discover deeply personal things, and forge real lasting friendships in the process, we often find we ain't the person we thought we were when we joined. whatever mask we use to start with, eventually we reveal our true face. if we reveal it to ourselves, then our time here's been successful, no matter what we had to say in the process.
the Karma thing seems a nice idea, but would it lead to even more postcounting, and cliqueness. something were all trying to avoid. if this site ever became "exclusive" or truly self-congratulatory, we would lose something.
that's it.
