Your choice (or theirs of course) to go safe or not. It'd be more presumptuous to turn up without one. But if you are going to put it one on - be better to rationalise it with them first just as a matter of courtesy. If they say 'Don't bother' then you've got a fundamental decision to make on the spot.

WIth a couple, I would suggest asking first. Something along the lines of:
