Printing help - anyone do much colour printing from home?

I need to print about 400 colour brochures from my home printer.
I have both an Epson Stylus D120, and a Canon Pixma IP3000.
Now the Epson has the finer print settings that I need to make the brochures look great, BUT the Epson ink is horrendously dear - and it cleverly knows when I'm using compatibles, and tells me they're empty while there's still loads of ink left.
I can use compatibles no problem in the Canon - but its print settings don't allow me to alter the brightness and contrast - and the quality of the brochures is nowhere as good.
Please, does anyone have any suggestions, or any recommendations for a new printer?
Can the brouchures have any black and white pages? That can save on colour ink.
I have to admit - I do the odd colour print at work (slap wrist).
Or take your brochure to various PC shops and get them to run one as a 'test' while you pretend to be interested in buying a printer?
Can't help on the choice of printer I'm afraid (apart from to avoid Epson's cos of the ink costs - but you know that already) - I'm too mean to buy a good one.
Buy original cartridges off a well known auction site!
Phone round local pinters and see how much they would charge you verus the cost of the ink cartridges.
Good luck
Thank you all for your suggestions.
Foxy - I know what you mean, it would be cheaper if some of the pictures were black & white - but colourful presentation is what is (hopefully!) going to get me the work, so I can't really cut it down.
Sarah - I got quotes from two local printers, plus an online print service, but all were quite a bit dearer. But I also like the flexibility of doing them myself, and changing stuff as necessary during a print run. The auction site's prices, including postage, are near enough what the shops are charging.
Essex - my printer's not on the list, but thanks anyway
Thanks all kiss
Have you thought about having your cartridges refilled? that way the printer recognises as a epson or cannon cartridge...I get mine filled and it's about 50% cheaper than buying brand new.

(in edit) sorry should have said I just put "ink cartridge refill" and where I lived into google and it brought up a list of suppliers
Have you tried 3000rpm for your ink, they do great compatibles for epson printers.
Yes I will look into getting my Epson originals refilled, thanks Reacher!
Thanks for the web address Sexoholics, my printer doesn't like compatibles but ta anyway lol

Have the D120 here also, they work fine on ours, remember you get different versions of compatibles for later epson printers, V1, V2 V3 etc, V4 tend to work on all models while the others are not recognised on newer printers and show as empty.
you probably already know this, but you cannot mix compatibles with originals, when using compatibles you need to install a full set.

I don't think that it supports your printer, so not much use to you...but for other Epson users: When I had Epson's I found 'SSC Epson Utilities' a very useful bit of software.
