I’ve wanted a private plate for ages and I might be getting one within the next month or so. I was originally planning on spending £250 but now I’ve got my heart set on a £599 plate! It’s two digits followed by my initials (3 digits).

For a time in my youth I thought of buying one and sometimes checked the Sunday papers to see if anything appropriate came up. Now I think I prefer the anonymity of not having one and not standing out in a crowd.
I also had, I suppose I still have though haven't seen her for years, a wealthy friend from a famous family, they all had personal plates based on the family business, if they still own them they don't use them anymore. It's a much too dangerous world.

I truly believe that if you worry too much about the dangers of the world we live in..... you'll never do anything or go anywhere........ whether its flying, going on the tube, or buying a reg. plate............

In my business - teaching / coaching on race track (everything from track day enthusiasts to serious career racing drivers) - I am in contact wih lots of people with aspirational cars. Very few have cherished / personalised plates these days, for several reasons, one being security / anonimity, another being the current trend amogst the verywealthy for a kind of inverse snobbery.
I have one associate / friend who is seriously wealthy - personal fortune in the region of several hundred millions of pounds - most days he'll be seen driving a small eighteen month old 4x4 with it's original standard plate. On important business trips he'll generally use his German high-performance 4x4 sports saloon, also on a standard plate. The only car he owns with a cherished plate is a 911 Turbo that gets used only occasionally... the plate on it spells a word that refers to speed, rather than the guys name.
On Lotus... the current Elise / Exige models (I work in them a lot) are very reliable and pretty nippy... especially the new Toyota powered one... their handling (all Mk2's) has been tuned to make them more user friendly for inexperienced drivers as an awful lot of Mk1 Elises ended up in ditches or wrapped aroud trees because they were too 'pointy' for your average driver. Can't agree on the front-wheel-drive Elan... it was the worst one they ever made!
If you want a reliable and fun sportscar try a Mazda MX5... not fast but they handle beautifully and are great fun... rear-wheel-drive as sports cars should be... and they can be acquired soooo cheap.
I do a lot of instructing on 'Supercar Experiences' in damn near every type you could dream of... Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, BMW (including the new M5 and M6, and the M3 CSL), Aston Martin, Lotus, Subaru, Caterham, etc, etc.... My advice? Don't touch an MG with a barge pole... they are crap... that's why they went tits up!
I know what my recommendation would always be.... Porsche (amd it's pronounced Por-sha or Por-sher, btw biggrin )... they are so reliable, handle superbly (so long as they're not more than about 15 years old!) . I would sooner own a 10 year old 911 than a new, well, anything!
Best plate to have on is someone elses.... beats the scameras! wink

I did a track day a while ago and pretty much every lotus boy span it and visited the grass, bless 'em! They should def have private plates, one reading front and one reading back so they know where to point it!

Are they from the group of people who should have "Left" and "Right" tattooed on their respective hands and who you meet every day on the roads the length and breadth of the country? dunno

I still like it, its my favourite car of all time. I liked it when it first came out, and I like it exactly the same now. All down to personal opinion and taste.
