a) I've got a Provisional car licence & undertaking lessons here. I will be in US for a month - does anyone know if I can apply for a provisional out there (they call it instructors permit), so I can continue my skills there.

Will my British driver's license be adequate for renting a car?
The U.S.A. has an agreement with most countries whereby the renter's full national driving license may be used for a period of up to one year in the U.S.A. This applies to the full U.K. driving license. Provisional licenses are not acceptable.
Most car rental companies require that you have held a full license for at least one year, regardless of age. The minimum age for renting a car is normally 21 although it can be as high as 25. Often an additional charge is levied on drivers who are under 25 years of age.
International Driving Permits are generally not required in the U.S.A but it is helpful to carry one. If they are taken, they are only valid in conjunction with a full national driving license. They should not be accepted on their own. It is recommended that drivers who possess a full national license that is in script other than Roman, i.e. Cyrillic or Arabic, should also obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP).
Young drivers may wish to obtain an International Driving Permit to use as a photo ID, in place of a passport, for entry into bars and nightclubs where the minimum age for entry is 21 years.
If you have endorsements on your license, do check with your rental company that these do not present a problem.
We suggest that you check the requirements of your prospective automobile rental company by contacting them direct.

However I forgot to mention that I'd be supervised by friends/family in THEIR car, so I'd not be renting a car out there. I've emailed various Texas State /Houstan City agencies regarding this and no reply. They're so much like these people you email on this site only to wait and wait and get no reply. Tsch.
I might end up learning on their driveway - the place is so big - everything's so bg in the US, their driveways could be a shopping parking lot in this country!

I've never found there to be much difference in exchange rate between the banks, the high street retailers that offer currency and the airport FX centres themselves. The only difference is usually the commission. Most of the FX centres at the airport allow you to order and buy currency online to collect when you travel and don't charge commission.

i can try and answer b) the best thing i would suggest taking are american express travellers cheques.... failing that have you tried either thomas cook... or try main post office's where i think they do it commission free....
and i am 95% sure you need a full driving license to drive in the states....

Various reports say that Marks and Sparks give the best rates on currency. But if you want to take plastic, ATM's are aplenty, and the best card, is Nationwide BS, as they absorb any overseas bank charges, and give you Bank exchange rates which are better than the Tourist rates you get in Hotels
