I successfully quit 3 years ago after being in bed with my hubby and yet again was hurt because he made a passing comment about my smelling of 'tabs'.. he was right of course. I went on a 10 week therapy course free of charge with our local docs and was able to get patches on prescription. Each week, I met up with my counsellor lady and she tested me with a tube to make sure I wasn't cheating. Yes I put on weight, quite a lot BUT I have since felt healthier, fresher and have more available money. In fact I don't think I could afford to smoke nowadays. Good luck tho, I'm sure you will succeed.

I agree, I was utterly depressed for ages, tearful, angry. I felt I had lost my best pal.. but it does pass honest. No one will say its easy because its not, but its worth the

I can imagine what they will say if I pack up smoking and put on a cpl of stone lol
It's nothing to do with being weak willed but about your desired outcome. If you want to you will do it if you don't think you'll do it alone then you won't.
The reason you want to give up is your health I pressumme? If someone put a gun to your head and threatened to pull the trigger if you didn't quit what would you do?
It's up to you :!:

could an SH Support Group be formed?
LP

This could be a good idea smile Got to be loads of us here that smoke, that really want to give up!! But need that something extra to help.
Pick a day to stop Sassy and see how many of us will join you and how many of us can give it up for good biggrin Maybe start a, given up smoking thread, to see how we get on and how many of us are climbing up the walls lol
Would it help dunno
the putting on weight thing is about the choices you make when wanting to do something with your hands... cos you haven't got a ciggie in there....
I know loads of people who didn't put on weight.
my brother for example carried around a family bag of apples when he gave up.... didn't put a pound on.
it is about your willingness to make the change. If you haven't got it and continually put the responsibility for your change with others then it aint happening.

Zyaban has many effects, most are to do with the brain and this is why its not so widely used. It does help with addiction but also plays havoc with anyone with any mental instability... that can be anything from eating disorders through to being a complete nut.
Might explain why its not so widely prescribed to some in here lol lol
I still believe anyone who WANTS to quit will and anyone who decides to use excuses will.... Your body, your life, your choice!
The benifits of quitting are far far better than any excuse not to.. 2 days nicotine is out of your system.. a month and the habit is broken completely after that its plain sailing as you will feel so so much better.

Or you could wait till your health suffers so bady its too late to make a difference but how many suddenly at the thought it will actually kill them quit so easily?
Anyone who gives up is doing it for such good reason and personally I admire anyone who has done it but I don't believe for one min its as hard as they say. Hard yes but life has far harder things in it which we all deal with.
Good luck to anyone thinking about it but luck has no part. Sorry if it sounds pompous!

Nicotine is proven more addictive than heroine!

yep, from my research this is true as well but this thread is disscusing stopping smoking or as I mentioned stopping a drug habbit.............ceasation of a habbit it harder than starting one.......and I don't think ( although this is only my expierience) that you can say that it is easier to give up heroin that nicotine.
I didn't!
I decided to give up smoking 8 months ago and used patches. They worked. I had been smoking since they age of ten, only stopping when I was pregnant. I thought I was invincible to illness.
Im June I started having breathing problems but the doctor said there was nothing wrong. Stupidly at the end of August when I wasnt very well I started smoking again for about 4 weeks. Suddenly I found I was having real breathing difficulties and feeling very ill and coughing. I developed a chest infection and have now been off work for a number of weeks with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). I have 2 sorts of inhalers and am just after 5 weeks beginning to feel well again.
Now I actually enjoyed smoking and miss it but this time no patches needed just a real fear that I will wake up as I did one night and find I cant breath. That is a great leveller for making your mind up.
I think patches work really well but if you dont want to quit its dam hard.
Yes I have put on weight but thats up to me to sort out now.
Good luck anyone who is going to give up. It is worth it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm also off to the docs on thursday to see what he can give me to help stop smoking, have stopped before but for variuos reasons have started time i want to stop and stay stopped....
average packet of cigs £5....a packet a day 7 days a week = £35 x 1 month = £140 x 12 months = £1680...thats a hell off alot of money.......

We put in a tin every day for the first few months that I quit... and bought a brand new TV cash.. was well worth it. lol
I admit I've still had a couple today but because of the sore throat, I've not had anywhere near as many as I would have normally.
Good on you lot who've already done it. Fingers crossed I'll make it too
2 hrs, 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months, they are the times when you really feel it.

Having had a heart attack almost 2 yrs ago you would have thought the doctor would fall over himself to give me something that would help me kick the fags wouldn't you...
Not so.................As Shireen has stated earlier in the thread he wont even think about it untill we have been to the stop smikong clinics and support groups and failed to quit...
The fact that its impossible for us to go to these clinics is besides the point...
Godd luck to ya Sassy....If you manage to get the prescription let me know who your doctor is as I feel a move coming on...

Pack your bags Steve. I've got my script wink
I can see why your GP was reluctant to give them to you if you've history of heart disease. Some of the info she gave me makes for pretty good reading. Apparently they used Bupropion ( Zyban ) for manic depressives years ago so they won't give it to anyone suffering from that either.
I have to take them for 8 days while still smoking then increase the tabs and stop the fags which means 16th Nov sees my last day as a smoker. I've got the number of a self help group in the area so might give them a call too, maybe attend one of the group sessions for some support.
Thats great news hun..kiss
I really wish you all the best and hope that by Christmas you are a confirmed non-smoker...
I hate my fukin doctor..... mad :x :x :x :x

You sound Like you want to so you will... No fingers crossed needed honest xx Just never pick one up again.. You will feel so much better, fitter, stronger not to mention being far sexier and sweeter smelling than you already are.... cool

The scientists/doctors only discovered that it was a great 'cure' for smoking when large amounts of mental health patients in hospitals just started giving up smoking for no apparent reason.
good luck hun:*
