copy-and-paste from MSN messenger help feedback:

Spot the irony:
help system topic is about being able to appear offline. BUT it seems it's only possible to "appear to be offline" if you have first gone online in order to manually amend your status to "appear offline".
You have thereby notified all your contacts that you are online, only to go immediately offline, which only needs to happen a few times before your contacts wise up to what you're doing.
Which defeats the object, just a little, I'd say.
Bloody computers.

i always thought that was a pretty bloody fundamental flaw meself!
to block a contact so you can appear to be offline, go online, show yourself to the entire Whole Wide World, select contact, block, suddenly appear offline without logging out! ummmmmmm not much of a give away there is it?
yup it's a bit of a dumb process if the entire point was to appear to be offline in the first place ain't it? how about you block a contact before you actually log in so they can't actually see you've just logged in and blocked 'em? s'ok tho! i'll just sneak in at 5 a.m. and do all me blocking when everyone's in bed! ;)
how about, instead of keeping me contacts on your server, i keep 'em on my PC, and when i log in, you just read 'em. bit like me offline address books? or is that like really really complicated?

You can say that again (but if you do, 'ware rant risk smile).
Contemplating sending in further feedback to suggest a "wasted" status option (I currently use "Out to Lunch" to suggest that) biggrin

You've got me thinking... let's say you have two people, Adam and Betty. Adam is looking out for Betty, eagerly anticipating a chat. Betty wants to go online but has to do some stuff and doesn't want to be bothered - or whatever (aren't we all entitled to the level of privacy we want to have?). "Appear offline" seems a good solution. But Betty doesn't realise that Adam has "display alerts when contacts come online" enabled, and immediately spots Betty's arrival, only to see that she disappears immediately. Adam may misinterpret Betty's action as a personal snub.
I wonder how often something like the above happens?
More irony - a tool that purports to aid communication actually makes it more complicated!

That would be an option, although then you lose portability. The option to have the option might be a partial solution smile
/me wanders away wondering whether anyone but us gives a shit about such things :)

Well when you close your eyes and think hard enough, I think you might be right :giggle:
You could always log into and amend your list of contacts that way.........

You may be right... dunno but who's going to do that? Most people will use the tools that are handy (same as most jobs).
Well I'm permananently show as being busy.. soemtimes I even actually am!!!! But what annoys me is when I leave the comp for a couple of hours (yes it does happen!! rolleyes ) and whilst I've been away I've lost my connection, connected again, and its automatically logged me back in as being online!!! Then I come back to my desk with loads of convos off people wanting to know why I'm not talking to them and what they've done wrong!!
