I was just thinking of ways to improve this place (and yes, I know that it's very good as it is, and I do appreciate all the good work done by owners and mods) and came up with the idea of regional boards.
Once you get to the forum, you now have two main boards: the cafe and the "lets meet" board. Both are useful in their own way... but I find that the "meet" board is a bit redundant, since most people seem to live quite far away from each other. Well, I do, anyway!
The cafe is great, but I find it frustrating on one level... because you can chat to people, get to know and like them.... but the erotic potential is dampened by the fact that they live 500 miles away.
So, why not have a board for London and the south east, one for the south west, and various Midlands, and a few northern, scottish, welsh and Irish boards?
I have no idea of the practical difficulties this might create... whether it's beyond the reach of SH to moderate so many boards. But it's an idea. These boards wouldn't be there to supplant the cafe, but to spread the chat more evenly.
I'm quite happy for people to tell me it's a shit idea, or that it's a nice idea but practically unworkable at the moment. I just thought it was worth mentioning.
Think thats quite a cool idea,as long as the general site stays as is can't see much wrong with no idea about the technical/mod. side of it though.
I agree with everything said... I like this place and don't want to change it too much, but I suppose I have to admit that for all my pleasure at chatting and shooting the breeze, my primary reason for coming here is to actually meet people, so I do sometimes find it frustrating.
Maybe the solution is to keep the cafe as it is, but break the "let's meet" forum into regional sections. After all, no-one goes there to chat... only to arrange possible meets. And I think people would be more likely to post if they thought there was a vague possibility of the meet actually happening, whereas at the moment, I wouldn't even bother posting there, because 90% of the posters are hundreds of miles from me.
I can't see what it would achieve if you're talking about the Cafe. If you want to meet people go to Let's Meet or the Ads where you'll usually find the location posted. There could be some merit in regionalising those parts of the site, but is it worth it? The beauty of the Cafe is that it allows people from all over to chat and interact, being at the other end of the country doesn't matter. We'd lose something by regionalising it.
Heres an idea that may just resolve this. Although people do include a location it tends to be whatever they call their area (as it free text) How about adding a regional (or even county?) drop down box to profiles? Don't make it compulsory, I know some people want to be marked as everywhere, or keep locations quiet. However it would enable you to do a targeted search without guessing how people have spelt the area:
i.e. of the problems: is it South, or Surrey, or the town they live in in Surrey? Very hard to narrow down in a search. However if there were a restricted regional drop down, I could limit to London and Surrounding, or South, or even Surrey if the list was county based. Still allow the current free format text box for you to specify your region, but make the search work of the resticted list of actual regions, so it easier to use.
So if we did this when you open a board and still see all threads and posts but if you off to an area you can narrow down both adds (be good in photo adds too) and posts by searching a region. This allows the lets meet up show you only threads started in your area or the area you interested in...
I agree with Ice on this one.
If it's not broken then don't fix it.
The good or even great thing about the internet, however you use it.
Is that you can communcate with pople from all over the country or world.
Why stay talking to your next door naighbour, when you can broden your horizons by using it.
SH is a community not just a group of people around for a chat.
