I was passing through Preston today and I stopped to buy a sandwich. The baker was selling 'crumpet loaf' :shock: Crumpet Loaf?! Yes, crumpets but sliced and bread shaped. I had to buy some. (I'll update when I've tried it!)
It got me thinking about regional variety in food, because I have *never* seen a crumpet loaf. I'm certain they don't sell them in my neck of the woods, Merseyside... not a million miles away from Preston, I might add.
What regional specialities are there in your area? What food is traditional?
I guess my offering is Scouse, a traditional Liverpool stew dish. I'm not a fan but people love it.
They do a similar stew round here called lob scows. I am making no allegations regarding who nicked it off who.
Until I moved here I had never come across bara braith (barra Breath as in heath). Its a fruity bread loaf, not as sticky as a tea loaf but fruitier and darker than a tea cake. Its rather scrummy and reminds me of my mums "cup of tea" cake.
Stotty cake (it's actually flat bread).

I also think Pease pudding is a fairly local delicacy
In Yorkshire you get (or used to get) Yorkshire Curd Cheesecake - a baked cheescake - on a pastry base. The cheese is rather grainy but not as wet as cottage and is totally DELISH. It has added raisins, sugar and a nutmeg sprinkle on top.
You can't get proper curd cheese now for love nor money - but a very close alternative is on offer in the Polish section of your local Asda.

in luton they sale this thing called fish and chips. they give it to you in paper and the fish can be haddock or cod. and it comes in batter and it's so lush

Laverbread, or Bara Lawr in Welsh, is a Welsh seaweed delicacy. The laver is mixed with oatmeal, which is formed into patties and usually fried in bacon fat.

Hendersons Relish.....made in Sheffield for over 100 years and not widely known outside the local area, although some people have it shipped to USA, NZ and Essex! A delicious addition to stews, pies, chips, beans far superior to lea and perrins. Yum Yum.
Around Maidstone we have apple, pear, cherry orchards, fresh fruit pies for dinner, lovely. Plenty of brown sugar, laced with fresh cream. This time of year is such fun.

I have seen crumpet loaf but Im a 100% warburtons crumpets guy, every Sunday with a drizzle of honey and coffee...........

Grey Peas and Bacon (no I'm not a 'native' like Dave <g>)
1 lb dried grey peas
1 large sliced onion
3 oz pearl barley
1 lb bacon (diced)
Chicken or Veg stock
Salt and Pepper (although the bacon may be salty so you might not need this)
Soak the peas and pearl barley overnight and then place in a saucepan with the sliced onion.
Brown off the bacon and add it to saucepan. Add a litre of stock, salt and pepper if necessary.
Cook slowly for two hours.
It's served mainly around Bonfire night (nowadays anyhow), It's kind of an odd one for the area, as the original recipe is Grey Peas and Ham, and that's from Latvia (where it's their equivalent of Goulash)
Been told split yellow peas work as well, Tesco sell Grey Pea's around this neck of the woods, but if struggling Asian supermarkets always have em.
