by running around the cage and spinning on the dreaded wheel smackbottom
Poor Rocky
I know I'm going to be devastated when our Harvey goes sad
But will you still hear the wheel spinning around in the night?
on a more serious note you shouldnt put that wool like stuff that the pet shops say is bedding in with hamsters etc for that very reason, use wood shavings and natural ones not treated ones or soft hay as they dont get tangled in your pets legs an stuff!!
On a less serous (errrrr but more sombre wink ) R.I.P Rocky the rodent!! long may he run the wheels of heaven.
RIP Rocky
I'll be gutted too when our Paddy dies, he's about 2 1/2 now so probably not much longer left sad It's so daft how much you get emotionally attached to the little buggers!!
Poor rocky!
srne are right about the bedding though!
A few years ago my friends hamster had babies, and she very kindly decided to offload one of said babies in my direction! rolleyes
So said baby arrived, looking pretty massive for a baby, I thought she looked a bit deformed even.
Anyway, a few days passed, and any time 'poppy' was in the nest she was squeaking and squawking away, I thought the poor thing was having nightmares or something.(as you do!)
2 weeks later and I'm cleaning out the cage, open out her nest box and lots of little pink wriggley things come flying out!!!!
12 hamster babies for poppy and maz!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRR mad to 'friend' for trying to get rid of her 'babies'!
Poppy was in fact a baby herself, hamsters will mate from 6 weeks old and have a gestation of 2 weeks, my friend just didn't realise you had to separate the babies!
Anyway, the nest had in it the wooly fluffy stuff, but once hamsters have given birth you're not supposed to touch the bedding or they eat the babies!
Unfortunately half of these wee beasties did have the legs all tangled up in the wool, looking very deformed and nasty sad and in the process of cutting the circulation off...
I actually scooped them out with a teaspoon and spent hours with a fine needle and tweezers trying to untangle the tiny strands of wool- just like on animal rescue- Rolf would be proud!
They actually all lived to tell the tale and were shipped off to a pet shop, probably to become some snakes dinner!
So, don't use that bedding unless you want deformed creatures, and on the off chance your beastie might be preggers!!!
maz xx
I remember my eldest lad (now 14) getting up early to get his birthday hamster out (before we were up) He was 4 at the time, and he must have dropped it and it died.
We woke up shortly after and i went down stairs where he sat and ate his breakfast in silence. The open cage caught my eye, and as i went over to the cage I saw the hamster....stiff as a board, but also FLAT AS A PANCAKE
When I quizzed lad about it, he finally broke down and cried...."oh mummy, i dropped Scooter and he wouldnt wake up, so i did 'press ups' on him like you showed me (I had been teaching him CPR the week before) to make him wake up, but i couldnt blow into his mouth cos it was too small!!
I laughed so much it hurt and didnt have the heart to scold him.......had visions of him trying to give mouth to mouth to a dead hamster.......the thing was, he had set the hamster on the coffe table to do his CPR attempt, right where he had just sat and eaten his brekky LOL lol
We still tease him about it even now biggrin
Look on the bright side Mrs Bone
I guess you didn't bury hammy in a shoe box but just stuck him inside an envelope then rolleyes lol

Tanlging is a problem, but worse is pouching. Hamsters pouch their food - And anything else they chew on! Any fabric accessories can be a problem due to this, as can the fluffy bedding pet shops sell.
AFAIK hamsters are quite resilient to pine shavings, but I personally recommend against them as they can cause all manner of ailments in other small furries (due to the chemicals they release). Carefresh is probably a better idea for a small cage, although it's pretty pricey. Megazorb is a little softer and a lot cheaper, but only comes in large sacks so needs somewhere to put it! Ecobad/ Finacard and similar cardboard beddings are probably the best of all, with very low dust and aromatic content.
Wire wheels are a serious danger and frequent killer, as it's all too easy for a small leg to fall between the bars, causing the animal to be spun around by the momentum of the wheel. Far better are Wodent Wheels, Silent Spinners, and some very pricey but very well engineered solid metal ones.

The Loo... Sam!! Have you not seen the Code of Practice for Disposal of Dead Goldfish???
Cremation is the preferred method... a service can be provided for a nominal charge with a choice of hymm, a small box or plastic bag to put him in come in a range of colours. He could even have his own little goldfish memoral stone... smile :)
