Hello every one,
i went to the dentist last week for a check up and was told by the dentist after a x-ray that it would be advisable to have one of my lower rear teeth extracted or that i could opt for root canal treatment. But what i still cant understand is that the tooth which has been identified by the dentist has never given me any problems what so ever.
has any one had either done and which is least pain full ?
I had a root canal, the tooth was made so thin that it eventually broke so then the dentist put a crown on it (which hurt like hell) .... before long the crown broke and I ended up having the tooth pulled out.
In my humble opinion, I would go for an extraction but I suppose it depends on where the tooth is. It cost me a fortune to have all that work done on just one tooth and it was painful. The extraction hurts on the day but then its fine.
But then maybe I just had a crap dentist??
my'n is the second from back tooth. yes the dentist did say that it may be a waste of money as the root canal treatment may not be successful and then it would need to come out.
I had a root canal treatment when I was 20 - I'm 46 and it's still going strong. It depends how tough your teeth are and how much structure they can leave. Mine was done cos the dentist found an area around the roots that indicated an abscess was developing even though I didn't have any symptoms yet.
Mine took 5 treatments as my tooth didn't have 2 roots - it had 4! one branched twice extra.
If you opt for the extraction I would play the wuss and go for the knock out drops. For a start you don't experience the dentist kneeling on your chest hauling your jaw out of your mouth and second, they can dislocate your jaw and cause a lot less damage to the root bed in the jaw-bone. Although the dislocation hurts for a while cos the tendons are stretched and the muscles bruised - that passes.
Either way - make sure you have lots of ice-cream, custard and jellies in. Not a formal treatment - but it's a great excuse to eat them. biggrin:D:D:D:D

I'm fascinated by your spelling of mine - my'n. Not textbook - but perfectly logical development of the word.
Makes you wonder why we bothered to adopt a variant like 'mine' when 'my' has the y.
/geekmode off/
I had teeth extracted when I was younger but not for the same reason. Didnt hurt at all in fact didn't feel a thing, that was with an injection. So if your worried about pain I can only say in my experience teeth extraction really didnt hurt. Mine were evidently a pain to get out as well dunno

MrM's last root canal/crown lasted over 20 yrs, he went to the dentist last week because of pain and was told it'd cost over £300 to correct it, they use new RC treatment now or £29 to take it out ...... gummy man now lol
Extraction over Root Canal anyday. lol
I can recommend these Dental Surgeons,
Drs I. Gassum and E. Fingersem.
Is it normal to have a sore mouth and a sore ar$e when you leave the dentists?
lol

I have had a root canal, top left nr the back. Took 7 or 8 visits each lasting 2+ hours where they kept shoving little "toothpicks " into the gap and measuring how deep it was...then packed it with antibiotics then sent me home for another month.

blimey, poor thing, i've had quite a few root canals done, never taken that many, usually2, 3 at most - it isn't the most pleasant of routines but i'd rather keep a tooth as long as possible, mine have lasted yrs and yrs (jack here btw smile)
i went back for round two today and did not actually feel any pain but the dentist says i have four roots! same place same time next week for me, apparently according to the dentist i have nice curves down there lol
