S is for Summer Solstice.
Have you even seen the sun rise on Summer Solstice? If you have and been at
'place of power' then you may well also have seen the s*** on the alter stone. I will relate what happens at one stone circle. Three or four groups all claiming their right to carry out their rituals at the circle gather. At one point the the police 'honour guard' get the order to 'face out'. Now that the none believers can not see a couple remove their cloth and s*** on the altar stone. Only after they have redressed do the police turn back.
Now I am not running the practice of the mid-summer 'sacrifice' down. It is just that the Winter Solstice has far more significance, it being the return of the sun, a promise of better things to come. So where are the couple? Out on the altar stone waiting for sun rise? No, it is to cold! Added to which I am sure that there was padding on the altar stone this year.
So this winter are we going to celebrate the return of the sun, at sun rise?
That depends, does the back of a camper at the stone henge festival car park count?
H.x
So long as it is as at sun rise.
And only as long as you got an alter stone to s*** on.....
There may not be much room on the altar stone, so we may have to be relaxed about that.

Just be carefull where you allow the s******* then
So who (in true Druidic style) are you going to sacrifice come winter?

Since you say who you can not mean the Victorian 'Druids', they do not sacrifice people.
Since I know nothing about the original Druids, would you like to help us out.

Perish the thought - a bunch of hippies with red hair who dressed in kilts according to the Victorians..... rolleyes

The evidence of the bodies from Wookie Gorge suggests the condemned - they were going to be executed anyway, so it seems that this was changed to sacrifice. There's also the bodies in the lake from Switzerland which suggest that age and sex were immaterial to the actual sacrifice, although it does show similar techniques. The problem is that it seems to change over time - there's certainly evidence of sacrifice, but it seems to have tailed off about the time of the expansion westwards of the Roman Empire, were they (the Druids) more worried about bringing the weight of Rome down on them than incurring the wrath of their gods?
If you mean that Rome deplored sacrifice. It is not true the Roman games were nothing but sacrifices to the sprite of an ancestor. Roman had nothing against sacrifice. They enjoyed seeing blood flow. A truly barbaric people, in the modern use of the word.

True, but the people around them weren't much better - the (so-called) Celts were into ritual sacrifice, the greeks for all the philosophy about the rights of man were vying with Egypt to control the slave trade, the Carthaginians were much the same as the Romans in terms of cruelty......
Although the Romans originally used games at funerals so that the dead person whose fuenral it was would receive a Gladiator as a 'spirit guide' in the afterlife, they eventually became part of the Roman psyche - if one of the condemned could die a noble death in the arena, then that was supposed to set an example to the Romans.

Yes but Sparta had no slaves. Subjugated people, yes, but no slaves. The Greek people were at least three peoples. As for the number of states, I am not going to try to count them. Apart from military service for Spartan men they had more freedom than anyother Greek, women as well. As for sex, by the standard of other Greeks they were liberated.

True, but then the Spartan warrior culture was famously cruel - look at how they would kill any baby whom they thought to be unhealthy, or anyone who suffered from a long-term illness, such as epileptics. It's a great irony that Gaius Julius Caeser would never have survived past childhood had he been born into a Spartan family. Sexual freedom doesn't compare to the right to life of the individual.
Slightly off topic but related......
Now I was bought up around Stone henge and the new forest and can still remember the days you could walk up to the stones unhindered and free of any charges. Why is it that someone suddenly thought it was there right to take over the running of these stones anyway I mean as a business, they belong to the people of this country surely. They say in defence it is to protect for future generations... load of cobblers if you ask me, only since they became a tourist attraction they came under any risk!
Whinge over... lol... lol  Same with many other sites around the country mind. Remember these are YOUR sites..

It's done because if steps aren't taken to protect it, future generations will never get to see it - Stonehenge is in a dreadful state and isn't helped at each of the 'solstices' when people think it 's a really good idea to clamber all over them. They also (EH that is) try to prevent vandalism (people like to chip away at the rocks to take souveneirs home with them), which all in all costs money. There is also the issue that there is still no clear idea what Stonehenge was for and there is still a lot of archaeological work to be done on them. As the public is loathe for the government to spend money on anything, the money to fund it needs to come from somewhere.
English Heritage, if they want to 'protect' the stone they should change their name, the stones are not English, they are pre-English.
It is clear what the stones are, an over founded time piece to mark the seasons and a place of 'ritual'.
Having said that they are a monument to the people who built them. That they were able to harness so much determination to construct one project, on such a scale is testemonie to their ablity to organize.
But it is how they are used no that gives them life, do we learn from them?
