Hi All
Santa didn’t bring me a Sat Nav for Chrimbo sadly, therefore it looks like I’ll be getting my own, could anybody advise me about buying a decent one please. Not sure about cost but budget wise I was thinking about £100 - £150 but I don’t know whether this would buy me what I need. I’m not into gadgets and therefore I don’t want anything particularly technical which requires much programming, something nice and simple which does the job would suit me just fine.
I'd be very grateful for any advice please xx
I have got a Tom Tom and cant go wrong with them IMHO. (well I have a few times cause I never listen to them :lol2smile
They are pretty simple to use and update, you can turn the sound off easily and there are some pretty good options in the settings for night colours etc and there not a bad price either.
I got a free upgrade on my mobile phone contract last year. I told them I didn't care what it was, as long as it does calls and texts. But when they sent me a Nokia 5230 I was pleasantly surprised to find it came pre-loaded with a sat-nav app (Nokia Maps) and a windscreen mount! The screen is obviously smaller than my TomTom, but it works just as well, and it's free!
Moral of the story (backed up by recent reported drops in sat-nav sales) is don't rush to buy one if you have a half decent smart phone.
I got a Garmin Nuvi 1410 in the sales just after last Christmas. I got it from Halfords at a stupidly reduced price (£300 down to about £100 I think...). Its a great satnav, qwerty keyboard, big screen, very user friendly. I would recommend that if you can find it cheap...
This

and this site

and about 30 minutes tinkering will give you a TomTom for about £40 ;-)
Tom Tom here, and wouldn't be without it (or i'd get lost) lol

You still get lost with it........ bolt
I bought an original TOM TOM some time ago second hand. Its a good piece of kit easy to use and operate. My main gripe is I didnt realise you had to pay to update the maps! and its not bloody cheap either so therefore I never have. Secondly its a machine nad has no local knowledge and will often take you the stupidist busiest route rolleyes If I am now going to an area that I know but I dont know where the house/buisness is within that area then what I do is drive to that area then when I get close turn the Tom tom on to find the house. For example in Bristol the Tom tom will always take me throught the town centre and ten tons of traffic and never around the fast moving ring road.

You need to 'tweek' it a bit :lol2:
Garmin Nüvi 1490T recently purchased with lifetime updates (max 4 per year) and traffic info. Great piece of kit.
Since 4th January in France though, using the safety camera database is illegal (1500€ fine!)
had a tom tom original now use my iphone and downloaded the European tom tom for 50 quid awesome

We had the same problems with the original Tom Tom but sadly it was laid to rest about a year ago. We replaced it with the Tom Tom live, it's constantly updating itself and can also see where traffic is building up so suggests alternative routes. Much better!
I have such a bad sense of direction (spin me round 3 times and I'm lost) so I'd literally be lost without it.

Don't worry Bimbo....I'll come and find you
As cubes says most new smart phones can do a good job as a satnav, this should improve this year with the launch of tomtom navigator for android.
The best I have used is the nuvi 1490T, works as a good bluetooth handsfree kit for your mobile aswell ;)

everyone will have a preference for different makes of sat nav my personnal one is tomtom all i would say is don't go for the cheapest one on the market shop around for the best deal also look at what comes in the box eg window mount make sure it is up for the job
I am a professional driver so i use satnav most days i have just upgraded my satnav because i needed one to cover europe
Hi, have to fly the flag for Sony here. I've got a NV-U92T affectionately known as 'Ethel'. Its got a big screen with easy to programme postcode or place details. None of them are 100% but I would not change to any other one. The annoying thing is that when Ethel says to go one way and I think the other way must be shorter she is enevitably right.
Good luck with your choice

Have you considered just using an Android phone ?
APPS pre-installed : Maps and Navigation.
The plus side you can use the SH APP (once you download it) and It's all free wink
Thank you very much ladies and gents for taking the time to help and advise.
Clearly there's quite a choice (more than I realised) and it never occured to me that I need something which may require regular updates. I never really 'got' the smart phone attraction but certainly worth considering.
Now hoping to make a more informed purchase within the next couple of weeks xx
I've got a copy of TomTom on my HTC phone too, it takes ages to connect, sucks up battery power and if i don't touch the screen often enough the whole thing goes to sleep. you also have to faff about if you get a call when using it as a satnav.
i have two private tom tom satnavs and one garmin built into my truck wouldnt trust the garmin in the southwest but the tom toms excel for me
