Surely it's just a little processor with a GPS receiver attached - in essence?
I know for sure it's possible to hack things about to get different operating systems and software where they weren't originally supposed to be. (I'm running a hacked windows ROM on my phone for instance)
The best way is to look for a satnav forum and post on there. The only reason you might not be able to run TomTom is a lack of processing power or storage space, but I doubt that will be an issue.
