Bailiff has just contacted me with some very alarming news!
Someone (Male) has just contacted her by her home phone stating that they obtained her number via SH... Now I've taken the time to search her posts and there isn't any number there... I also know both Bailiffs only give out their Mobile number...
The home phone is ex-directory and the mystery caller withheld his number..
Has anyone ever had a similar experience or can think of a way that this number may have been obtained?
If this had happened to Claire while our baby was in the house while I was at work. I know I'd be going mad with worry. So if anyone can shed any light on this please do so ASAP. If it was just a prank then please be so kind as to IM a MOD and explain it was a prank, to set Lou's mind at ease.

I'm wondering if someone one on SH is a hacker of sorts.. Seems unlikely to gain an ex-directory number any other way unless it was on your own personal system somewhere?? an old email or something??

thing is we have had a few prank calls when col answered they have put the phone down called with number with held.
only my best friend and my mum and dad have my house number, and wouldnt give it out to anybody only my mobile thats if they did.

If you call your phone provider they can get u a withheld number, i have had it with some calls my daughters was getting and telewest got me the number 2 pass onto the police i understand BT are not as helpfull tho

i remember we were getting prank calls a while ago - number was withheld and it realy got to me...
anyway, i rang BT and when i got through to the right dep't they were really helpful, they put a block on witheld numbers i think, i forget the name of the service but i think it was free for a month or two but then they were going to charge an extra £4 for the service but i figured when the prats got bored of trying to get through they would maybe grow a brain cell and move on...

Trust me, getting a number for a hacker along with any number of other personal details is not particular hard... I'm not going to go into details but I can or at least USED TO hack... However really only concentrated on gaining access to restricted websites.
I do not hack anymore with the added amount of security the average PC user has these days its not worth the hackers risk... Still the home PC market is still increasing FAST and the first time buyer doesn't have the knowledge to get Firewalls, Anti-Virus, and Spyware programs... Hackers will exploit these people and do...
I use Norton Firewall and Zone Alarm Firewall, Norton Anti-virus 05, Spybot, Adaware and Spydoctor, also use AOL which incorparates Spyzapper and Email Anti-virus filter... I run these all at least twice a week... and I still get spyware and occasionally a trojan or two....

Lou, listen to Libra, she's been in a similar situation - you must be feeling very worried just now.
Someone posted something about unwanted/threatening 'phone calls the other day I think. Someone else advised them that for BT to give you the withheld number, the incident has to be reported to the police first. Maybe you have to get an incident number or the police have to actually get the number from BT?
Might be best to keep anything else to pms, just in case the person is getting a bit of a kick from seeing that he's caused you grief on here. Just a thought, hope that helps honey.

It would be easy for someone that knows your in RL to have seen you pic and your postings though, possibly someone that had already got your phone number.
If Lou doens't give out anything but her mobile number then Shikukai I have no idea why you think that person could get any details from SH

Now, there are different levels and types of hacking and one of the easiest forms is to monitor peoples information on chat rooms, forums and emails... People often talk about their hobbies, their pets/kids names all kinds of mundane stuff... or so they think...
Now pet names and special dates (birthdays) and the like are very often used as passwords... The user often uses something that's private to them such as a name, date of a special event because its easy for them to remember, but not common knowledge... but people also bring up these trivial details in every day conversion. "Oh its my birthday day today and my dog Mitzy did the funniest thing this morning"
Now we have birthday announcement posts, we've had people talking about there pets on here, and a hacker will be taking all this info in and building up a portfolio :small-print: of people / users and systematically using these bits of information to hack peoples email account and systems...
This is all sad fact and probably the most common use for hacking today...
