Exactly! and you are not on your own with that one.

I am not so sure that just because a reply is short - this actually does mean person/people will turn out to be a rather disappointing encounter.
As it has just been pointed out - it is easy for someone to prepare a detailed reply to send and then just cut and paste it to all and sundry.

I tend never to write anything in my replies as i feel it helps me keep a sense of mystery.
Besides with minimalism being all the rage a plain white email is this seasons must have for every swinger!

This is one of the reasons I began to think about how we interpret short PM's/replies.
Does our dismisal of short messages mean we are possibly missing some wonderful people?

Thats not true!!!! I know many many dice enthusiasts who only use the board games as a means to an end, and you could never in a million years call them boring, extremely strange and in need of a good shake yes, but not boring! I never have the problem of being bored, you need to be able to think to do that!!!

yes

I knew yours would be short rolleyes
I think there is a difference between sending a reply that conveys a good message and one which is full of clever waffle.
However the reply of the advertiser to the reply of the responder is not always quite as bountiful as one would expect.

If you in fact get one at all. But hey-ho that's life!

I found that when the advertiser writes back to say they are interested, in some cases thay said very little about themselves.
i think it is because the advertiser thinks it is not necessary.
yes
I have heard it said on several occassions - I have indeed said it myself -
"If they can't be arsed to write something more than that - then ...."
But I am having second thoughts.
Why should someone be expected to write a bloody essay - in hope that they get any reply at all?

Thats true PoloLady
I think that if both parties make an effort to say a few things about themselves, prob in PM rather than in open Post, then there is a probability that things COULD progress to a meet

It can be difficult to know where to draw the line. A massive essay makes someone sound like a 70's Californian , undergoing self analysis. Not very British.
A brief sentence may say nothing or could convey good information.
However I think if the advertiser asks for a reasonable amount of information, they should be prepared to respond in as much deatil as the responder. Don't you think?
I hope not.
My replies are usually short because I get nervous and I'm shy.
Like to think i put more effort in when i meet people confused
There is the case of an advertiser who wants a lot of detail, but does not have the skill to reply in kind. Either through shyness or inability to express oneself.
But a short note to explain this would help.
But that's the problem. The less you actually say about yourself, the more you probably have to do to explain why.
So its a paradox.

No confused

Is that a YES then ?
here's my

worth
Its all about trust.
At first you can't be arsed writing much to somebody in case you end up playing e-mail/pm pin ball. Then, depending on how the messages go, you get the 'feel' for the person your talking to, just like in real life. By this time you should have worked out whether the person your corresponding with is actually genuine (NN1 has this down to a fine art....most people on the net are men..including the women!) and so, you can expand the conversation.
I think most people are, rightly so in most cases, still a bit wary of the net and that will have an effect on the openness of writings as well.
There you go, I'm off to bury me head somewhere...mmmm

No.
But what I am suggesting is just - because a message is short, it does not mean the things that we may assume.
I have thought about his today and I often reply with short statements or single line questions. If they keep up the replying we eventually get a conversation going.
My usual reply to "tell me about you then?" is "what do you want to know?"
Some people need more specific questions - some only need broad ones.
Some people find it easy to waffle about them selves - others don't.
Yet we make assumptions about short replies in general - rather than what the short reply actually is.
