Men of Harlech, Welsh male voice choir
Amazing Grace. Judy Colins (the most powerful version I have ever heard)

Have you heard the Male Voice Choir do Myfanwy? Stirring stuff
As for Amazing Grace, try to get hold of Aaron Neville doing that song. It's the most beautiful version.

 thanks hun kiss
Several songs hit me when I hear them...
You'll never walk alone.....Played at my fathers funeral.
Evanesance(sp?)......My Imortal..
Kirsty Mcall......Thankyou for the days.....Played at my uncles funeral as a message from my aunty to her departed husband
Will no doubt think of some more later on..

Have you noticed the continued theme here. Funerals. Music played at loved ones funerals seems to affect people for years to come. We had a thread about last songs a few weeks ago. I would really hate to pick a song for my funeral that for years to come would reduce my friends/family to tears.
So, I guess, I've got to find an obscure song that I like that won't be played regularly on the radio.

But back on-thread: Can I suggest "Lux Aeterna" by Elgar. From 'Agnus Dei' CD by New College Choir, Oxford. Played at my Dad's funeral and completely demolished me. Still does.

:bounce:
I love that CD, in fact I love choral music in general. I only discovered Agnus Dei because I have the radio on all day in my office and I listen to Classic FM. One day a couple of months ago I just had to stop what I was doing and get closer to the radio, I was captivated and very moved by the singing.
I just had to know what the piece was called so I logged on to the Classic FM website and found out that is was called Miserere mei, Deus by Allegri. The first recording I found was included on the Agnus Dei CD so I ordered it right away. I challenge anyone to listen to that CD and not well up.
Also HornyBear did you know that Agnus Dei II is out?
This has just been played on the radio,
Don't give up - Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush
Has to be Cavalleria Rusticana, one of the most emotional peices ever written in my opinion.
Used as the theme to Raging Bull, and at the end of the Godfather Trilogy.
You'll never walk alone, played at my brothers funeral.
Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. City of Angels anyone!
"In My Life", performed by Sean Connery on George Martin's final album.
Jeff Buckley also works for me.
Eva Cassidy, for personal reasons as well as the beauty of her voice.
The Hymnn Jerusalem by the St Phillips Boy Choir. Played at two of my relatives funerals who died within 24 hours of each other.

You may like to look out for Les Swingle Singers. They did an amazing album many years ago but probably out on CD singing J S Bach manuscripts using voices instead of instruments. Except they added a jazz bass and drum underscore. Again voices in harmony does it for me every time!!

Les Swingle Singers sounds very interesting, I am a big fan of Bach, love choral music and anything different and I play the drums - that CD was made for me! lol
I won't profess to know what any of the latin means - I just know I like it.
Thank you.
One of the great freedom songs...........
Bruce Springsteen
Land of Hope and Dreams
Grab your ticket and your suitcase
Thunder's rolling down the tracks
You don't know where you're goin'
But you know you won't be back
Darlin' if you're weary
Lay your head upon my chest
We'll take what we can carry
And we'll leave the rest
Big Wheels rolling through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams
I will provide for you
And I'll stand by your side
You'll need a good companion for
This part of the ride
Leave behind your sorrows
Let this day be the last
Tomorrow there'll be sunshine
And all this darkness past
Big wheels roll through fields
Where sunlight streams
Meet me in a land of hope and dreams
This train
Carries saints and sinners
This train
Carries losers and winners
This Train
Carries whores and gamblers
This Train
Carries lost souls
This Train
Dreams will not be thwarted
This Train
Faith will be rewarded
This Train
Hear the steel wheels singin'
This Train
Bells of freedom ringin'
This Train
Carries broken-hearted
This Train
Thieves and sweet souls departed
This Train
Carries fools and kings
This Train
All aboard
This Train
Dreams will not be thwarted
This Train
Faith will be rewarded
This Train
Hear the steel wheels singin'
This Train
Bells of freedom ringin'

You really must listen to the late, great Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers for songs to bring those goose 'The Mary Ellen Carter' 'First Cristmas away from Home' and 'The Lock keeper' Another great weepy is' Forefathers' by Dan Fogleberg.
moon river, always makes me think of my son who died a few years ago

i'm crap at those though :giggle:
"Why" by Soul Deep UK from the "Don't Trigger" EP.

....gets me every time.
For me its "Everything I Own" by Bread.
Quite a few people think its a guy writing about a ex girlfriend, its actually about his dead father. (makes the lyrics more poignant.
Boy George had a bash and killed the song some years back, ther was also a reggae version but to me the David Gates version is top of the blubber list
You sheltered me from harm
Kept me warm, Kept me warm
You gave my life to me
Set me free, Set me free
The finest years I ever knew,
We're all the years I had with you
And I will give everything I own,
I'll give my life, my heart, my home
I will give everything I own
Just to have you back again.
You taught me how to love,
What its all, all above
You never said too much
But still you showed the way
In my new, I'm watching you
Nobody else will ever know
The part of me that can't let go
I will give anything I own
I'll give up my life, my heart, my home
I will give everything I own
Just to have you back again
Is there someone you know
You're loving them so
But taking them all for-granted
You may lose them one day
Someone takes them away
And they don't hear the words you long to say
I would give anything I own,
I'll give up my life, my heart, my home,
I will give everthing I own
Just to have you back again
Just to touch you once again
Harry
Verve: The Drugs Don't Work; "..Now the drugs don't work, They just make you worse, But I know I'll see your face again..."

Eva Cassidy, for personal reasons as well as the beauty of her voice..

Somewhere over the Rainbow is just heartbreaking.
My all time favourite is Ray Charles, You Don't Know Me.
Scarily I first heard it sung on Soldier Soldier....remember that!
One not many people have heard of, but one to really make you think and get emotional too......................
Smokey Robinson - Really gonna miss you. From the film of The Temptations sang by Smokey at Melvins funeral.
I know it's available on american import but I don't wanna pay £25 for one track so if anyone has a copy.....................................................................

What a Wonderful world, by Louis armstrong
I always liked jazz and in the late 80's saw good morning vietnam, I can never listen to that song in the same way after that, the images of bombing and destruction with that playing changed the way I see the music, I still love it but it more of a meloncholy way now.
On a lighter note the old Pulp classic Common People as sung by William Shatner had me crying, I was laughing so hard I nearly wet myself, Its the bit were he really goes for it its so terrible its fantastic smile
Stay safe & Have Fun

Bridge over troubled water .............. by some crooner confused
It was on a CD I got free from the Daily Mail and was playing in the truck when I got the call to say a close relative had died, I have never been able to listen to that song again nor the CD which I have saved for some reason sad

"...some crooner"?!!!!
Don't you mean Simon & Garfunkel?
Or was it really a cover by some crooner?
So there IS someone that plays a free CD from the Daily Mail?
I always thought they went straight into CD frisbie land or became beer mats!!!
Another vote for:
Hurt - J. Cash
Adagio for strings - Samuel Barber
Others:
Street spirit (fade) - Radiohead
Lucky man - The Verve
Back to the old house - The Smiths
Don't let the bastards grind you down - U2
Will you - Hazel O'Connor (personal reasons)
It's good to see Barber's Adagio being so popular. It's my favourite piece of work and I've already said I want it playing me out.
REM's Everybody Hurts is a bit of a weepy for me too. I've always liked the song but a friend dedicated to me on the radio just after my Dad passed away and it's been special to me ever since. Lovely sentiment in that song

May I reccomend the recording by the Tallis Scholars, it's included in their "best of" compilation. They use adult sopranos rather than trebles giving the performance more "soul" because grown up women are likely to have a better understanding of the subject matter than little boys!
The "top Cs" s send shivers down my spine!

Oi!! Leave Cliff alone!
