Yep - if you have concerns about something of a criminal nature, the police have surely got to be your first resort?
call the number from a withheld number and see who answers?
if there is proper concern, then id be tempted to call the none emergancy police and report it.

You're not wasting their time.
I had an unnerving feeling once when my daughter got a message on msn, I thought it could be a hoax but I did report it and they came back and said it was a hoax, but that put my mind at rest.
Please report it either way it will put your mind at rest.
Better to be safe than sorry.

if this is a pay as you go number they may not be able to find out who owns it.

Dont be so sure.
Mobiles can be tracked to (if memory serves) 100ft, so even if it is a PAYG then there is a good chance it can be traced.
One thing stands out and yells *hoax* more than anything else. Yes, you would text someone and say "thanks for my birthday pressie" but would you feel the need to mention your age? Ever? I sure as hell never have. And why when you didn't respond did "she" continue to text?
Sounds to me that it's someone trying to draw attention to the under age aspect for whatever reason- possibly to try to get someone into trouble. You've done the right thing in reporting it- but I smell a rat.
if its not a 14 year old girl, but someone pretending to be then thats really weird.
a fact i recently found out.. if ANYONE has a sexual/pornographic/ nude/ sugestive/picture of a minor ( under 18) on their phone, wether they send it or not, is is a illegal offence.
even if the picture is of the minor that they took themselves.
so if a 13 year old takes a picture of herself/himself such as above and has it on their phone and its found its an illegal offence. even if they are sendingthat pic totheir 13-14 year old friend.

. . . .

That may be a bad suggestion as it could be a premium rate number and it is all a scam to get people to phone or text back.

Even without the risk of it being a scam, I wouldn't call the number - could implicate her in some way, by having contact.
True but as you can see my first loyalty is to my wallet biggrin
Google the telephone number ... might have happened to someone else.
I'd report it to the police. See if your phone has a 'block number' option too

She's already reported it to the police
this has just jogged my memory about something. a friend of mine who is 68 is bringing up her grandchildren, she was looking after her grandsons phone, hes 11 by the way and a text came through, she asked me to read it to her and it read. hiya sweetie i cant wait to suck your cock again, meet me in the usual place. i told her to ring the police, but she has lost faith in them and wont. i took the number and tried ringing it, goes straight to answer phone.i know it should be reported, but what can i do if she wont , it worries me it really does.
