I would like to organise another munch here in the south. My concern is that I would have to hire out a hall, as there are no decent pubs where I am. If I did this would people be prepared to help me pay for it? Would interested people actually turn up (as I would be in the s--t if they didn't)? What went wrong last time, and how could we resolve the problems?
Please give me your views.

One of the things that went wrong last time was that the thread was up for weeks and people were still debating about where and when to have it. Once that decision had been made it would probably have been better to lock the original thread and start a new one with the details of when and where and just asking the question "who wants to come?".

Trying to fill a hall when the first SW munch was only attended by 4 people is a big ask. Maybe it would be better to find a reasonably sized pub and just see what response you get.
If you do decide to go for a hall then I think people would be prepared to chip in but don't make a similar mistake to last time by starting a thread with too many open ended questions. You're gonna have to do the leg work up front and actually find the venue. Find out how much it would cost, what they're prepared to do for you and when it's available. Then open the thread with a positive attitude. I'm sure you'll have far more success with "There's gonna be a SW munch in <place>, on <date>, we're gonna have to chip in <cost>, who wants to come?" rather than "I'm thinking of organising a SW munch, let's have a poll to see where's best and would people come if they had to pay?"

Just an idea, but as the spring/summer is here , why not organise an outdoor munch, park picnic spot (obviously dependant on the weather). this would mean that no cost were involved and as long as a remote and suitable venue was arranged the event may interest doggers too!!
