I was sorry to find when i logged onto your site, that you have let a porno site advertise in the form of pop ups and also install a program onto your computer wihtout asking permission. The program is a dialer program and will charge anyone who uses it 2quid/minute just to surf the net.
I appreciate you need to make a profit, but at your communities expense? Please reply admin
It sounds like your PC has been infected with Spyware. Ive logged on a few times tonight from different PCs and not seen a single pop up.

Well said Mark. More power to your elbow. You run a great site.

"And anyways, who the fuck here pays to use this site? Well, hands up anyone who pays me to use Swinging Heaven? I don't mind this turning into an expose post, because if I'm lying the truth will out won't it?
FFS mate, please get a grip. This site is completely and utterly free. Free in terms of NO PAYMENT TO USE IT, and, evidently, free in terms of speech, or we wouldn't be having this conversation would we.

Sorry for my tone, but sometimes I despair I really do. Here, here's my vain, take my blood, because me being up late now going through the photo ads moving them around and checking for spammers, and then replying to peoples' emails because they've had a problem using the site etc., isn't good enough for some people it seems.
Good night."

Mark -
No pop=ups, no premium lines, no installation of unwanted programmes
Lots of fun, friends, banter, meetings, frivolity, (can't think of another word beginning with 'f' sorry hump) and a deep deep appreciation of all the work you do to keep this site spam free, cost free and idiot free!! Oh, and for not taking out your swat gun and deleting that idiots account immediately - very restrained!!! kiss  :rose: :rose: :rose:

Do you use a or other web based 'free' email account? If so, that's your culprit - not Mark.
I've got anti virus software that detects spyware and I found I was getting the same dial-up programmes installed without my permission, as well as pop ups - not that I'd ever click on them, mind.
At first I thought it was something to do with the SH banner but I delved a little deeper and found it was that was responsible for the pop ups. After a certain time at night the pop ups change from ads for Barclay cards to premium rate sex services.
As a general rule of thumb, always look towards Bill Gates at these times. 99 times out of 100 you'll be right.
Mark...
We're all with you and you and Helen have got loads of mates up here. I think you know that.
Have a great weekend, everybody!

Ah, really? I need to speak to you a bit more about this, as it seems this is something I need to know more about so I can help people get rid of this crap rather than blow my top at them

The blowing of one's gasket is one of life's least appreciated pleasures, mate. wink We all need to do it now and again.... and if, like you, we'd been up since dawn trying to avoid smelly nappies to puke we'd all do the same... The only problem is clearing up the aftermath.
I've got MacAfee, which as I said detects Spyware. When I do a sweep, I pick up 11 different generic dialers, some premium rate, some not. I clear them out, connect up - straight to the - and hey presto they are there embedded again. Only thing was, they don't 'pop-up' unless you click on a link within - thus it makes up think that it's the site you are visiting within the frame which is responsible.
But of course, even if you are visiting SH form another means - such as a book mark, once you've opened that browser the pop-ups open.
It's always, always Bill Gates and you shouldn't get the flak for him!
You can of course get software to stop pop ups but I can't be arsed.
Hope this settles a couple of minds...

Dialers do not arrive via ' ' per se.
They can arrive via email on any account... but they seldom do so, the majority arrive in pushed frames (web popups). Some forms of javascript can exploit buffer overflow errors in Explorer and install, but the number one technique for dialers is the mass popup technique.
Multiple popups appear on your desktop, with numerous 'fake' anumated gifs of 'installing software' etc... people then tend to start clicking God knows what in an attempt to get rid of them... as a result, they often end up accepting the installation of a dialer inadvertently.
Beware folks, some of those dialers will dial without your confirmation - check your phone bills for strange numbers... They tend to call premium rate numbers for periods less than 5 minutes a couple of times per day... thus hiding themselves in your bill. (they make a profit by taking commission from the number and duration of calls they receive).
DerbyStud's not being a total git over this, just misled. Making an assumption about the source of a dialer, rather than knowing so for sure. In order for him to be sure, he must have seen the dialer pushed at him from the site, and if so, ought to have rejected it. In truth, he's been to this site (and no doubt a number of others) then discovered a dialer, and lo and behold, jumped to conclusions.
Great site Mark, and I think you did the right thing keeping this thread open. These things tend to go 'underground' if you don't and rumour mills start working.

it's not true that you need to click a link in .... allows html mail to be rendered.
Html allows popups and software deliverables (programs) to be pushed to you. When you open a (oranother other mail program) that supports html presented mail (that means fancy colours and pictures in your mail), then it can also cause you to start a download of software..... no link clicking, not even opening the mail (if you use outlook express' preview pane etc).
Regarding Marks comment on 'Trojans'... any software you install can also be tagged along with a dialer (this then becomes a trojan since it's masquerading as something it's not... or something that fails to tell you what ELSE it is). All you nice folk out there looking for cracks for your latest program will be downloading nice 'serial number generators' etc. Do so at your own risk. They are often rife with spyware. Play with fire, expect to get burnt.
There are many tool on the market allowing the splicing of two programs together... so that the first will still install, and the second be installed silently. This is so damn easy it's untrue... and therefore it's a hackers dream to be able to send you a lovely copy of 'photoshop', or 'latest mirc patches' etc... little beknown to you, it's doing what it says on the box... but doing a fair bit more besides.
Good luck out there, it's a dirty old word *grin*

OK,
You all know by now that I am almost a complete numpty at these things and am getting in way over my head.
But I've got all the stuff to stop adverts and things, and got all the filters turned up as high as they can be without blocking access to the sites I use. when I log on to I do not get ANY pop up ads or ads on the screen at all, just the login screen.
But I still get pop-ups now and again, and I do not believe any of these come through using swinging heaven, or . I actually think they come through AOL, but I don't get enough of them to worry about. And yes, it is Kirsty, and Sally, and Hazel telling me about their new web-cam.
Echo all the thoughts about the site and Marks efforts.

Mark, everything Analog Kid says is true here, as for eliminating spyware you could do worse than pointing folks at this web page:

AdAware is a free utility which detects and eliminates adware, spyware and tracking utilities which are copied to your hard drive when you visit web pages. Most people are astounded at what it finds on their machine the first time they run it! It has the facility to get automatic updates and best of all, its free.
On a more personal note....I've been swinging for a few years now and been a member on a few sites, this IS the best of all of them and the only one which seems to have a true community spirit, with everyone pitching in. If anyone seems ungrateful keep in mind that it really is just a minority....youre doing a sterling job here and the people I see currently flocking to this site is testimony to that.
Peter
Kitkat...
It could be I'm sniffing up the wrong branch - but the correct tree.
Where these things are coming from can be a variety of directions. Everyone's system is different. The software profile on mine would make the average techie scratch their head in confusion... but I use all kinds of programmes as part of my work.
However...
After a clean sweep to get rid of these unwanted dialers and such, I connect up. It could be OR MS Messenger that these things are landing on my system though. You have AOL so it could be the same horrible lurgey but from a different source. And also don't discount the theory that your system has probably got more filters than mine.
To prove this beyond doubt, I just cleaned them all out, connected and went straight to the BBC site.... and I got a pop up plugging Barclaycard. The only other Internet based programme I had opened was Messenger. Are the BBC going to plug Barclaycard? I think not.
I've no doubt you techie nerdish folks will continue to rake this one over (but please keep the words in plain English? Please? biggrin )... but I've prove to my satisfaction that it ain't Mark that's responsible for the addies. I hope I've convinced a few others as well...
Hxx
Once you have visited a site, it doesn't matter if you close down your windows and only have the BBC site open with Messenger... javascript can still run in an invisible window. This happens a lot when suddenly a pop up appears.
I can categorically assure you that MSN messenger dows not cause popup advertisements. That's a fact. Next time this happens, press CTRL+ALT+DEL and kill internet explorer. The pop up will be killed with it... it's launched solely by Internet Explorer, NOT Messenger.
But this is not the point... pop ups aren't the only delivery technique for trojans and 'spyware'.
This is going to get all very messy now... but half of the spyware detection applications are... you guessed it, spyware.
Secondly, 'spyware' does not mean you're being monitored per se. It's a definition given to programs that establish a connection back to some server for a multitude of purposes, and those that aren't clearly defined are considered 'spyware' in a generic sense.
My advice to the majority of you would be:
a) Stick to explorer is you have to, but consider alternative such as Opera or Netscape for web browsing etc.
b) Be more aware of what you're accepting when you visit chat sites that say 'if asked to allow this application to install - click yes'... even this site does that.
c) DON'T fall into this trap of 'install this to find yet more trojans'... you're digging a deeper hole. Stick with ONE decent virus checker and one decent firewall.
d) learn about how your firewall works, and use it properly. It is not a guarantee of safety, just a tool to help you improve it.
e) Keep your pics, and personal details OFF the pc, put them on a safe CD or floppy, and only pull them out as and when you need them. If you value your privacy, take private files off the pc when it's going to be an internet pc.
Finally - I'm telling you, it's not , or Microsoft, or any of those companies pushing this crap on you. Use your heads, it's the two bit 'download this to fix everything on your pc, internet washing, history cleaning, super duper protector' crap.
/TheKid
I take it ALL back....
Those fuckers from Microsoft and STILL haven't paid me commission.
I've used AdAware and it doesnt seem to establish a connection back to anything, I use it to delete tracking cookies. The firewall I use is ZoneAlarm, which is free and seems to do a pretty good job of detecting which programs do want to establish connections out to interested parties. Damn their souls. mad

lol, send them some spyware AK!
Peter
watch out for 'SVCHOST'.... anything going through that is pretty undetectable to the firewall.
Just wanted to offer support for Mark and echo the view, of other more worthy members, that this is without doubt the best site of it's kind. biggrin
After reading the techie discussions............ my brain 'urts sad
shuffles off, to make sure AVG is working and run Adaware program

Thats true. It can be looked at manually using -s, which I think comes with Windows 2000 tools. Tlist displays a list of active processes and the -s switch shows the list of active services in each process. Of course if anything *is* there then its probably too anyway!!! banghead
Ere Mark: it might be an idea to put some of AK's recommendations in a canned email for folks who do get on your case about pop ups again? Just a thought.
Peter
mark you are doing great with site as you say it is free i joined mad dogging after dark to find out more it was supposed to be £25 a year but with exchange rate which i cant get back and the bloody site was no go for wales all it did was give pop ups for more site which you had to pay for so dont let it get to you keep smile
Mark, you are more than forgiven mate, if anyone on here is entittled to "lose grip" as you put it, it's you.
Keep up the good work mate, keep it real.
Mark and Linda.
by the way, forgot to say, "WE FUCKING LOVE THIS SITE" biggrin
Well all that was a clear as mud to me. blink
But the upshot for any companies that blast me with pop ups, spam and what have you is that I have a list of you all and I will never NEVER use you're services. biggrin So tough shit.
Anyone fancy a pint?
I know AK has explained that MSN and are not responsible for pop-ups appearing.
However, as a layman, could someone explain why the pop-ups start only after I've logged into groups? In fact, they only start after I've logged into any adult group in . If I don't log into an adult group, merely log into my mail account or a "non-adult" group, I am pop-up free.
Thanks Mark and no, you didn't bamboozle me, lol. smile
It sounds as though I may have software running, of which I am unaware. My problem now is, finding and removing it confused
As I've said before, I do run the Adaware program as well as leaving my firewall on. AVG picks up most nasties, on it's weekly sweep. Other than that, I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks again for the help and keep up the good work biggrin
There's an Ad at the top of each page...? where...?........ oh yeah, so there is!!
Was too busy reading the posts and Ad's to notice! wink hehehe
Great Forum Mark - don't let 'em get to ya! biggrin
