Having AGONISED over this I think that I've finally made friends with Google! It seems that Neil may have hit the nail on the head with his talk of barnicles or whatever.....
Is "Swinging the lantern" the same as "swing the lamp"? Does it refer to old sea dogs telling tales of bygone days?

The phrase was then later used to describe one who is telling a tall story, (as in, I think he's swinging the lamp) and the apropriate hand action, reaching up to swing the lamp, is still used between those in the know when someone is holding forth with a suspected tall tale..
