the wrist and back of neck are VERY sensitive, and for all black and celtic knot work, you are setting yourself up for a lot of pain!!......
for a first tattoo you should have it somewhere more fleshy like the top of your arm, buttock, or shoulder.
Then if you pass out or decide its too painful to carry on, or that you need a break and come back to finish it off, then at least you will be able to hide it till its done!
having said that, on the fleshy bits its not that painful....more uncomfortable.....when i had the cherub done on my upper arm a few months ago, i amost fell asleep having it done, cos it got kind of comfortably numb!
I decide to have a tattoo no and then and then I hit myself over the head repeatedly with a house brick until I change my mind. (Explains a lot) I much prefer a nice piercing.
From my many friends and acquaintances who are into body art I have heard that necks and wrists can be a bit painful compared to the fleshier bits. A number of them have had cover ups (its a surprisingly high proportion in fact) and most attest that the cover up work is the most painful.
Good luck, dont forget to post a pic when its done.
From what you describe, it's not going to be a large tattoo and you're not planning on adding more and more tattoos so I would suggest back of the shoulder ... neck would be painful though location-wise would be a good place to have the one tattoo. I'm not a fan of wrist tattoos as most I've seen have been pretty tacky looking (and some of my fetish friends are big on tattoos).
which is why I employ the house brick.
The other posters have just about covered it, upper arm and shoulder seem less sensitive as does the lower leg. Areas to avoid would be the ribs and the areas of chest close to the armpit.
edit: the back of the neck isn't too bad and I'm told the wrist is o.k. different folk feel different things, I've experianced mild discomfort, to grit yer teeth pain, hence stay away from your ribs. It's best to say that it's not pain free in any area.
Hi tattooing is something really personal to your own style and preferences and is unfortunately really addictive. I started with a small tattoo then ended up with a sleeve that took 65 hours. Some body parts are really painful under the arm, ribs and yeah the back of the neck is supposed to be sore, but if u want it the best advice i can say is brave the pain as the result, if its a well thought about piece and done by a good artist is well worth it. Go with the best tattooist u can find ask around or even better go to a convention where all the best artist from the area or region will have stalls. Good luck and hope u get what u want!
iv got a tattoo on my shoulder, altho im fat its not especially fleshy there and it didnt hurt as such, just scratchy
i know ppl who have them on their wrists and they say it hurt a bit but not enough to put them off
just think carefully about what u want and where u want it cus uv got it for life !
and go to a good place to get it done !
I have 3, none hurt any more than I expected, the worst bit was the outline of the dolphin.
inside the eye-lid, see it evertime you blink, and only show it as part of a party trick
lp
Thanks all for replying! Might be making the tattoo smaller than I thought, having it designed for me.
Will post a pic when I eventually get round to having it... got to save up first!!!
