What a brilliant Idea it is to try and claw back money from drivers of a specific vehicle well done our government. rolleyes
Yep you guessed it I drive a 4x4 but I have my reasons and trust me they are valid.
Firstly its not for posability I’d buy a Porsche if it was confused
1 It has 7 forward facing seats WITH seat belts so I can ferry my daughter and her friends around in safety.
2 I use it for my business as well as pleasure where else can I get a vehicle that will be able to carry 1 tonne of equipment during the week and tow a caravan or nip to the supermarket at the weekend. Thus saving me the need for 3 vehicles an every day car a works van and perhaps a mobile home. But apparently I’m being uneconomic by driving a 4X4 :?
3 My family owns farms so I need the thing for driving off road hence the 4x4 bit and yes it’s for working not just for fun.
4 I live in the ar*e hole of nowhere and trust me when it snows it snows, so I can still get about. Also the roads near me flood on a regular basis making them unappeasable in a normal car so they have to seek alternative and LONGER routes meaning they burn more fuel but I’m still the uneconomical one. :?
I appreciate they are a tad uneconomical if you look at them as a simple car. But I do my bit its serviced on a very regular basis to help maintain fuel economy. I am also aware that on normal roads it eats tyres at a rate of 4 every six months but I do carry a lot of weight in it and when they are replaced at great expense one of the charges is for eviromently friendly disposal of tires but what do they do with my old tyres when i've paid them to take them away? why they they get sold on as a material to make the bases of road cones
Sorry to go on a bit but it's just got my back up a bit that i'm being penalised for trying to be sensible in what I drive. All I ask of you is the next time you see me trying to load 6 screaming kids onto a moped or heaving 3/4 of a tonne truck gearbox in to the back of an 850 cc mini spare a thought for our government who would rather me run 2 or 3 vehicles instead of one. :?
Hi Sheddy,
Considering you use this as a business asset....is there no tax avoidance you can implement to off-set this cost..?
CC..... cool

I probaly could if I dare face my accountant, he dreads me coming along with my shoe boxes of receipts trust me its not my strong point accounts or taxes. But if anyone knows about if I can or not press the button below.
I do actually agree with you Sheddy that some people do actually need 4x4's. Up to a year ago, we have always had one but it was only used for towing the caravan (I know, another reason for everyone to jump on our backs but think of all the money we put back into the british ecconomy rather than spending it some bar in spain), anyway we did around 6,000 miles per year in the 4x4 and the remainder of day to day driving in my little ecco friendlier car.
We were conscious that both cars were diesel and even though one of them gets lower rate road tax cause it is a 'cleaner' engine we looked into the possibility of using 'Bio diesel.'
We regisered for a course on the making of it, bough loads of books, found suppliers of used cooking oil and a company who would supply the material required. I contacted Customs and Excise and had all the necessary forms sent out so we could register to pay the road duty direct and we began our first experiments.
However, to our dismay, the experiments didnt last long, with the cost of the methonol, costic soda, heating equipment etc etc, and the standard road duty, we was paying over £1 per litre and then only if we bought all the materials in bulk!
In the end we went back to the good old fill it up at Tescos each week!!! So the powers that be are saying they are encouraging us to 'Go Green' but you try and do it, you need to take on a mortgate confused
It's not on 4x4s'...it's on the emission specs of the engine.
BAND..... CO2 .....Diesel Car .....Petrol Car..... Alternative Fuel Car
G ......Over 225 .. ....... .......
loads of 4x4s' won't have their duty increased....just the ones that fall within the emission specs shown.
Quite a few SUVs' and others fall into the specs for group G...ford galaxy for one...
Dont start me on this subject mad
We have a 4x4 specifically to tow our caravan. It does 35 mpg (diesel) and it's emmissions were when it had it's MOT in January...... So how come they penalise the cleaner 4x4's?? You only have to look at some of the older cars on the road to see where the greeniesneed to concentrate their efforts.....
Pisses me right off it does!!

considering the hikes in every level of motor related tax in recent years, i've noticed that the 40p per mile allowance hasn't budged.
then again, Gordon Brown gets a nice big luxury limo provided at the taxpayers expense, so why should he give a shit????
can't wait for him to run for PM :kick:
the 4x4's arnt the the problem buses (especially london buses) & HGV's are the most polluting vehicles on the road.

Whoa they’re my eager friend where do you pull the fact that HGV's are the most polluted vehicles? Trust me delve in to the subject and you'll be amazed how clean they are. All new trucks have to comply with euro 4 emissions meaning that they HAVE to abide by set standards that are bloody strict let me tell you hence on trucks we are now seeing a reduction in engine capacity whilst still maintaining the same power due to technological advances. The most significant example can be seen in smaller trucks that have now reduced their number of cylinders from 6 to 4 to help reduce pollutants.
Sheddy a former HGV driver now runs a HGV related business and is also a member of the IRTE (yes I’ve got letters after my name) lol sorry not jumping on you but I will defend the haulage industry to my last breath. Remember if you own it a truck delivered it.

I rekon its all these bleedin garden sheds that are depleting the forests that should be taxed, what with all those creosote fumes.....must be depleting the ozone layer big time. wink
Now you've done it ....... where’s me soap box
banghead :taz: :fuckinghell: :sparring: duel
feckin interfering barstewards :shakefist: < note to admin, we need one of those pls
its just another way of extruding our hard earned by devious means. We have just been told that our refuse collection will be dropped from once a week, to once every 2 weeks rolleyes
All thinly disguised as an echo friendly move  BOLLOX
Its all about money, how feckin stupid do these people think we are ffs? they will get a right shock when I only pay half my POLL TAX, oh silly me, I meant 'council tax' when it happens, reduction in services means reduction in payment to me, and yes i am repaired to fight it through the courts.
When you look at how many times we pay tax on every penny we earn its a feckin joke. and not a very good one at that.
ok, I know that the economy has to be fed, and i don't expect anything for nothing, but there is a limit.
as for the 4x4 question, Sheddy has already intimated that in a number of circumstances, they can actually be more echo friendly than the alternatives. personally I love em, as long as they are used for a purpose, what does wind me up is the congestion cause by all those mums picking up the kids from school in their Fronteras (that was a troll btw, watch the flames come in now lol)
right, that’s it, enough ranting, I'm off to the GFZ for a pint. wave

here here sheddy well said (and theres us thinking you spoke bollox)
in fact the hgv of today probably gives out less gases than my p reg 1.8 petrol taxi a friend of mine is a haulier and the lenghths and costs he has to go to over the past 2 years to bring his existing trucks in line with government guidelines has nearly crippled him and at one point nearly put him out of business.
sheddy i can get you some red diesel cheap :giggle: :giggle:
if theres any ministry or tax inspectors reading this the above comment was a joke (honest) wink
