Hi guys and gals
I have a problem with my computer again I switched it on tonight and it says no operating system found !!!
I was running it on windows xp could I over ride it with another program say windows vista or 7 ect... If so where can I get one of these from?
Thanks
Sounds like maybe the hard drive is ermmm fooked.
ours went really nuts... when we switched on... was kinda strange n not loggin in n we lost all our auto loggin sites..... sad
Try System restore from safe mode.
1. Press F8 as your PC/Laptop Boots up - this should take you into a menu - Select WindowsXP safe mode - this should run a light version of XP, on the desktop right click on My Computer and select Properties, you should have an option for restore.
You can also restore from Command Prompt, if you need help drop me a PM.

i would agree with this as i had the same error a few times before finding out the boot sector of the hard drive was kaput
This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:
The basic input/output system (BIOS) does not detect the hard hard disk is 0 of the physical hard disk drive has an incorrect or malformed master boot record (MBR).
Use the fixmbr command in the Windows XP Recovery Console to repair the MBR of the startup partition.
If you have the XP cd this might help:
os has been wiped, you will need to reinstall windows. hopefully you will have the recovery cd that came with the pc...
or..get a MAC!
Crickey don't get a mac, they cost double if you are lucky.
Sure they look nice, but the mac pc divide is very slim these days.
Besides, hard drive failures happen regardless of OS.
I always use a raid 1 hard drive configuration,
That way if a drive fails, the next one takes over. ;)
Are you calling me shallow bodnid?! I don't just bring things home that look aesthetically nice you know, they gotta *ahem* work brilliantly too :lol2:

Slightly off topic but I wouldn't get a Mac either, well one of the new ones that have the Intel CPU's in them, PC's in Mac boxes IMO.
Mac's are perfick, do what they say they do, rarely have any errors, multitask without any problems and everything pretty much works within it with the operating system significantly less in money than it's Microsoft counterpart and it's support infinitely better.
Everyone should be on a mac *cough*

Fumbling,
Unless you'd been hearing your hard disk clicking/chirping away recently, then probably not a hard disk failure, but a relatively common XP issue that does occur and for which loads of recovery info/instructions available for.
The issue with XP is that it occasionally looses the 'boot sector' on the hard disk, so when it begins booting and gets past BIOS (which basically tells it to now go to the hard disk) the first thing it tries is to read the 'bot sector' so that it knows which Operating System and then what to load/boot as you usually see.
If this is corrupted or it can't find it, then it's stumped and says "no operating system"
As you've obviously got internet access, then have a look on the Microsoft support forums as solution usually found there, alternatively just boot from your 'emergency disk (s)' (remember when you got it all those years ago you were prompted to create these).
oooh Indeed, just like their owners :smug:
