I'm getting a 'XPCOM Event Receiver - Application Error' when I close down Firefox or try to open Msgr.
I've tried google, but drawn a blank.
Just wondered if anyone had any ideas on how to fix it?

They only thing I can think is maybe its a programme clash between that and somthing else or maybe youve got some errors on your hard drive causing it not to function properly.
If that is the case its going to be a hard one to resolve because you would have to try and identify the software causing the clash and remove that perminantly,or if its errors on the hard drive it would mean formatting the hard drive and reinstalling xp and everything else. confused
Are you running any McAfee products? If so you could be getting a conflict between the McAfee update exe and your browser. McAfee is deisgned to work with IE and IE only. It requires that certain settings are made in IE, although you may never use it. McAfee do not even recognise FF as a browser and susequently do not provide ANY support for users running FF.
I have located a Forum discussion relating to this problem,If you want the URL then PM me, as I don't want to post the URL here.
whatever you do make sure all your important stuff is backed up onto disc or external hard drive as any confusing error messages can often lead to an unscheduled crash and reformat.

Hi there wave
I'm not using Mcaffe. I use the windows firewall and AVG as my antivirus. Would be good to have the URL though in case there are some settings to check.
Thanks kiss
Fluffer, yep great idea. Burning CD's as I type smile

Kitty, PM'd you.
After trawling a little further, It would appear that the fault lies in the XPCOM interface modules contained in the Mozilla (FF) installation package. These are unique to Mozilla applications and can, according to the docs, be "fixed" by carrying out an upgrade of FF (see the FF help files for details)
These packages allow FF to interact with external (i.e. not in the program) objects, for the creation/modification of user interfaces. These are the bits you see (sorry if that sounds like I'm talking down), and are fundamental to the expansion abilities of the Mozilla based browser system that includes FireFox, Thunderbird, etc.

Thunderbirds !?!
So this wouldn't be fixed by a reinstall of the browser?

Kitty, another PM biggrin......
Might also be worth uninstalling the offending program - Firefox - and then reinstalling it but with your firewall and anti-virus software switched off.
Sometimes during an install, anti-virus software will rewrite scripts in the sofware being installed and corrupt the program. Firewall's also need to be instructed to grant certain programs axcess to the Internat and permission to run certain processes. A lot of the people having exactly the same problem seem to be using McAfee or some other firewall and anti-virus software, so I would have to assume this has someting to do with it.
I had a problem with Windows XP Updates several months ago because I forgot to turn my firewall and anti-virus off while I installed the updates. My anti-virus software didn't like one of the updates Windows was attempting to execute and promptly rewrote part of the script... on rebooting, Windows wouldn't start! I had to do a system restore in DOS to get windows back, then reinstall the updates with my firewall and anti-virus switched off. After that there were no problems.
Just to add to what barewolf has already said, if you are going to uninstall, reboot and reinstall, you must make sure that xp's system restore is turned off during the process or that will defineatley re corrupt any files.
Thank you so much for the help :bounce: :bounce:
It's all working again now.
Rolled back to a system restore point and fingers crossed all seems ok
