Techie help needed please

Hi all,
As most of you wil know I'm a photographer, and even if I say so myself, I take a very good picture.
Alas, I am rubbish with the finer points of technology.
My sister has sent me some photographs from a recent christening that she wants me to print out for her.
I can see the photographs in the e-mail she has sent to me, but every time I try to open it after I have saved it onto my computer it keeps coming up with the error message "unknown file format"
I always save my pictures as .jpg format and can open the others I have on my computer.
I had to do a reformat a couple of weeks ago and am wondering if there is something in my settings that might need altering so as to let me view them.

Thanks you guys.
I've kinda got it sorted now. I have to open the pics in a new window, then save them as a bmp and then change the file extension to jpg.
I think it's acting up, but probably my incompetence when I reloaded all my stuff.......lol
