Weve just bought a brand spanking new gorgeous a media center pc and i was really looking forward to getting it set up to the Sky box to use as a recording device (yes i'm excited about things like that). After following the instructions on how to link it up it didnt work  .Much fecking about followed and finally i bit the bullet and phoned the store i got it from to find that at the moment you can't link up a pc to Sky.
Now ive had a look around the internet and i'm sure that it is possible but not in the way that Microsoft please does anyone know how this is possible??Ive got an S-video,TV in and white, red and yellow atachments on the TV card on the Sky box had two output please can someone help me???
Much appreciation would follow any advice on this matter.
Hi steve, how about a scart to Video / audio sockets lead? Then you should be able to feed whatever the sky box is looking at to the media PC like any other composite video?
You wont be able to use the PC to decode Sky, you still need your sky box for that, or to change channel, but you should be able to at least see / record it with your PVR software.
That sounds like it would work, why the bloody hell didnt i think of it  .Thanks for that TNH,i just need to find a cable thats about 10 metres long, not cheap i bet.
Oh and the Media Center comes with a remote that controls the Sky as well biggrin
Not something I've done but I find useful. Good luck.
Hi Steve,
To solve your 10 m cable problem have you thought about one of those "rabbit ears" radio link things that let you play video's in one room and broadcast a signal and watch them in another room on a telly attached to a reciever. You could then replace the telly by your PC and record with it. I don't know what the quality would be like but it may be worth a try.
I used to have one and one I got it set up the quality wasn't bad at all.
Just an Idea smile
Aldi had some SCART - Sperates adpters with 10m cables for a fiver a while ago, I think you can get Belkin ones from Argos for 20 quid or so. You'll only be able to watch whatever the Sky box is tuned into though, but if you want to watch terrestrial (I'm guessing the PC is in another room, otherwise why need 10m?) while someone is watching Sky just run a coax ariel cable through to it as well. People swear by s-video for quality, but I've found with the cheaper cables composite (the yellow one) works better over any sort of distance, but most likely you'll have to just use whatever's in the kit you get. By the way, TV recording and general picture quality can vary massively depending on the TV card in the PC.
All these problems and having to ask the store - Not an issue if you build your own, you know what's in the box, and what it can and can't do then cool
Steve it is possible. I run my TV through my PC at the moment. There is a slight time delay with scart to PC but that is ok.
I bought myself a TV reciever card so I assume I've cheated as this has a Sky/cable/arial and radio reciever built in. If you are doing it Scart to USB then you will need the software to view the TV channels.
I'll find out what the sky port is when I've sobered up. Something like ana-1 or something daft. I dunno confused
Hi Steve,
I got a Hauppage WinTV card which allows you to view TV from an ariel etc.. etc...
This is hardware and comes with all the connections you need.
The Video format connection for Sky TV is usually, PAL BGHIDK on channel number 87. This is scart to video-in connection. The quality is as good as the monitor you have. I would also recommend a sound card for the extra umph and a graphics card to take the load off the processor. This will let you have the TV on and play games without any drawback in performance on either. Isn't screen in screen great!
The TV card I bought from ebuyer was great. It lets you do autoreplay, schedual recording. Recording qulity. Record on the fly to DVD/CD/Hard drive. Sound only recording. You basically have all that the SKY PLUS offers but without the option to view two different Sky channels at the same time.
Hope this helps answer your questions. confused: Let us know if you have any more.

I feel a bit silly because I reread your thread and just gave you completely useless information. redface
Just protend the TV card you have is a normal TV. Attach them as you would normally. All you need to do now is setup the TV card to choose the correct channel. This is the PAL BGHIDK on channel number 87 I mentioned earlier. Any Sky technician can do this for you and they won't leave until it is all working. biggrin
The white, red, yellow ports are mainly used for recording devices (cameras, vcr, dvd, etc).
You can also attach your TV to your computer via your TV-in port. Then you can use your PC as the video recorder and watch TV on your big screen. :D
Give me a bell if you run into any problems.

Hiya K,
The drivers can be found here for the card:
The product name is AverTV DVB-T For HDTV(Windows98 not supported)
You can pick either as they contain the same driver information but for different regions.
Pick you Operating system and save it to your desktop.
Remeber to remove all the drivers off the PC first before installing these to limit corruption and confusion.
If you are using XP (PRO) and you get an error message when installing then use this file:
If you are using XP Home and get an error message install ing the drivers then you will need this file:

Have a look at their support page and if your problems still continue then get abck in touch....

I've seen this before, and I seem to remember it's down to how the TV interprates the signal. The time I saw it, the telly had three or four inputs, and the right AV channel had to be selected for it to run in colour. Then I read the TV manual, where it said that certain equipment had to be connected to the right input socket, with the right settings, or you might get a black and white picture...
Is it all sorted yet?
I am dying to say "Why not just point the webcam at the TV to record it?'
But not until al the scary techy stuff is over. :uhoh:

The black and white problem is down to the signal format going into your TV, It will appear b/w if you are the signal goint from your PC/Video/DVD etc is NTSC rather than PAL.
Hope this helps smile

And that too! I wanted to say something along those lines, but couldn't remember if it was true or not (couldn't be arsed to go amd check on my media PC, would mean standing up...).
NTSC wasn't the issue with the telly I mentioned earlier though, that just had far too many inputs, all with different built in settings, stupid thing.
The B&W problem is now sorted thanks to Easy's hand mate biggrin
As for the recording issue,i'll find out when the cable arrives next week, fingers crossed.
Thanks again to everyone for their help and time :D :D
No probs mate.
Let me know what connections you've got when the lead arrives and we'll have a go at the record side of things.
By the way I think it is actually possible to change the channel on the sky box with an IR repeater I remember reading about it at some point but as we dont have sky never bothered looking further into it.

depends how you want to do it. An IR repeater should work ok, but there's also a remote eye that you can hook into the second lead that runs to the second TV from the sky box that will recieve commands from a sky remote.
