Hi all, I'm currently using blue yonder broadband, or trying to, but I seem to have a problem. On Monday my send light on my modem( the webstar one) went out so I cant stay online I get a limited connectivity message and I cant get a valid ip address. They have given me multiple excuses, spyware problem, firewall problem, windows fault and a regional problem, all of which I think I have eliminated. I have reformatted my c: drive and reinstalled windows and now when I try to install my blueyonder it tells me they cant allocate me a valid ip address so installing fails. I'm connected via usb if that helps. Worrying/annoying thing is everything they tell me seems to be my pc fault. I have managed to connect using a dial up con. and they can get a valid ip address so this is driving me mad.
An engineer is supposed to be coming out on Monday after 9 phone calls but I would like to be armed with some info if anyone can offer any.
Have you tried to get hold of their latest software?
This is NTL related, but I believe BY use the same methods....
IP's are not the unique part of identification to BBnd users... its something called a MAC address and every network card has one and in theory they are unique. When you use USB the modem has to generate a mac address.
If you go from USB to a network card you have to go through the sign up process again to register the new MAC address (Re-installing after a sucsessful MAC registration does not require you to have the NTL software, just the drivers if you are using USB.) the re-registration should be done using your original details.
Sometimes the system gets confused...
The BBnd modem needs to be switched off for about 1 hour then turned on and re-registration performed (This is very very rare, and usually happens only when moving from USB to network card, or using a different network card)
If you have firewall software or hardware then there are some IP addresses that have to be allowed through.. If they are not then either the IP cannot be assigned or after a few hours your connection on some protocols are dropped or you loose the connection totally.
has an indepth article and settings... most notable the DNS, UBR, and summat else IP addresses that need to be set.
XP's service pack 2 does loads of annoying things to make your PC more secure, but at the same time can feck up your internet connection and/or some programs as a result untill you de-secure some of the settings.

I've got Blueyonder thro a webstar usb as well. If the modem is talking to your computer properly then the power and cable lights should be lit and steady and the PC light flickering.
You have to go into control panel and click on the systems on the Hardware tab then click on the device manager tab.
Your modem should be under the Network Adapter it has a red cross or a yellow and black icon on it it may have to be toggling the disabling/enabling the device button as it may be that a reply if that doesn't work.
There are a few questions you should be asking yourself.
Did I instal anything recently that could possibly interfere?
Have I plugged it into any of the other usb ports for test?
Noddy questions I know but always look for the easy answers first.
I wouldn't have recommended reformatting, only to be used as a VERY last ip address is not set internally if you have an automatic setting made but I won't confuse you on that if I don't have to.
Blueyonder can ping (check) the MAC address(it's like your house address on the internet) of your modem from their address is written somewhere on the body of the can tell you whether it's handshaking with the net properly.
Don't mean to treat you foolishly so please don't be back to the forum and see if anything else needs doing.
Thanks for all your help all, the problem seems to have resolved itself after all that.
Marmalaid the way I eliminated a regional problem was when I rang blueyonder the 6th time I think they told me the previous advisor had given me wrong info and admitted probably because he could not be bothered..... hmmmmm.
Once again thankyou all... B&C
