ok... got my wireless back now... Archers and everything.
So Rubber Duckie is now fully wireless again also... though reception and attitude can vary, and indeed become rather startling now!
There he was... in the deep-end of the bath... pootling and paddling quite nicely to the strains of something freeform and relaxed... a crackle and a hiss... all of a sudden I have an axe-wielding topper-wearing duckie, in a style of drug crazed Slash...
not nice near toes, knee caps... or nadgers...
the technical world is fraught with danger.
"hello, Injury-Lawyers are Us?... yes, I've had dealings with Techical Corner, and I was wondering if you could....."

Official response from Technical corner.....I think you have mixed up this thread with the...."I think I need therapy and I think I need it now thread".....smile ....

I first started washing my calculators out with methylated spirits ( u know the purple stuff)when mom washed em in my trouser pockets. An idea my dad a watchmake gave me cos he would do that to wet mechanical watches. Having given em a good wash in meths (unplugged) u just leave em to dry. Dont forget meths is volatile and very flammable so take safety precautions.
Since then ive used the techniques on a variety of wettened elctronic devices.
What Ive found lately with mobile phones is they often have a water sensitive component that becomes unglued if it gets a soaking. Obviously a deliberate ploy to build in breakage. I reckon its worth a try. Suggest u do it out doors for a keyboard and just splash it on all over, works for me.

Meths is great for cleaning glass (or mirrors) as well... gets all the grubby oily stains off then ya can just wash it with soapy water...
PS my sons a watch maker... wondered why he carries meths around with him lol Though he was drinking it for a while confused :? :?
Gary, any idea why my computer keeps telling me Ive run out of memory.... I may only have two web pages open and I get a warning pop up! Thanks in advance... smile

Hi smile.....
I would try goin into control panel and checkin to make sure your audio drivers are still selected and workin....Are you on XP or Vista??.....on XP goto "sounds and audio devices" in control panel....then click on the audio tab.....and make sure there is a sound card selected in "sound playback" default device section.....you can also double click on the volume control in the bottom right hand corner of your screen to check your settings.....
In Vista goto control panel and the "hardware and sound" section. In there you can check your audio settings....
Also if it is just sound from web sites that isnt workin try installin firefox and usin that instead of internet explorer as it is far faster and more reliable.....
These sort of probs are hard to fix without havin the machine in front of you but if that still dont sort it post again with your make and model of lappie....
Cheers Gary xxx

Cheers Gary :) I already use Firefox, but will have a play with all the panels etc and see... Ta xxx

Hi....:)
This can be caused by a few things.....you could need to upgrade the amount of physical ram on your pc it always makes an enormous differance to strugglin pcs......but first try this that i have blatantly pinched off another site....this checks to make sure your virtual memory is set as it should be....
# Click Start, then open the Control Panel.
# Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
# Click the Advanced tab.
# Under Performance, click Settings.
# Click the Advanced tab.
# Under Virtual memory, click Change.
# Under Drive , click the drive that contains the paging file (virtual memory) settings that you want to change. In almost every case, this will be your C: drive.
# Click to select the "System managed size" option, then click Set.
# Click OK three times and restart your computer.
Also sometimes just rebootin cures your virtual memory probs....
check that your hard drive is no more than 75% full as well :)...

Is there anything I can do to speed up my pc? I use IE to access the internet, I have tried Firefox but it's no faster and wont run chat (continually searches for plug-ins). I'm on wifi broadband (512k), and it currently takes about 20-30 seconds to load each page, that might not sound much but it does add up. I've checked my running processes because I wondered if they had anything to do with it, there's over 50 of them and I haven't a clue what most of them are. Oh yes, it's a sony vaio, about 2 years old.
Very handy thread biggrin

i take it you have clead your cache and run both disk clean up and disc defrag other than that sorry no help
Yep
Yep
and Yep
plus I compress all the files in my C drive to give me some breathing space (30gig was down to 1.2 free, now has 17 free) the vaio has two drives, I've moved all documents to the D drive which is a lot bigger and is 70% empty. I have quite a few large programs which are on the C drive and it wont let me move them. (Photoshop, Quark, Dreamweaver, Reason, Fruitloops plus umpteen (love that word) others)

I'm on Virgin-Media (cable internet) and usually just after lunch their cache-servers seem to decide to not bother updating any more, so if I repeat a search I did earlier in the day I get exactly the same results, but nothing after say 2pm. BUT if I do a 'new ad' search I get all the new ads I've been missing. Ctrl+F5 doesn't help and I know it's not my local cache because (a) I've cleared it, and (b) I've tried it on my laptop. Don't really expect a fix but it's worth a try before I try to explain it to a lovely 'suport person' at Virgin-Media LOL
cheers

Might be worth running a disk scan against your hard drive. Open Windows Explorer (or the Windows key and E), right click on the hard drive (usually C) and selct properties/tools and then click "Check Now" on the error checking section. Make sure you tick the options boxes. It usually needs wait until you reboot. If you have a large hard drive it may take some time, but it can often fix problems with slowdowns.

You need to reload the chat room page by pressing F5 on your keyboard, you may need to do this several times.. confused :? :?
If that doesn't work, check that you have the latest version of Flash installed! wink

Hi.... smile
Sounds like you have already had some good advice from this thread.....glad people are takin an interest.....you have done lots of the obvious etc.....I was always under the impression that compressin files was a bit of a stopgap that never really works cos the process itself (compress and decompress) tends to slow down the pc considerably.....a good rule of thumb is to never fill a c:drive over the 75% mark.....a good idea if you have 2 partitions is to store created files photos web pages etc on another drive.....programs will install by default on to your c:drive but could also be installed on another partition/drive.....you can't move a program that has been installed so best just reinstall on another partition/drive.....runnin as few programs as possible simultaneously is best as well obviously.....if all this fails to help.....then try runnin "window washer" a very useful prog on a pc with a small hard drive.....or bite the bullet and use the dreaded restore discs.....nothin speeds a pc up more than restoring it.....maybe get an external drive as well these have come down in price and could be added to your home network.....good luck :)

Hi both smile....
Ok this can be caused by over heatin....which can be caused by the heatsink on the cpu bein full of dust....a screwdriver and a can of spray air are needed to cure this....always shut pc down before takin side off....switch off power at the wall but leave plugged in (helps to earth chassis)....DO not touch anything inside but carefully spray heatsink fins to clean them out....this is the easiest cause of shutdowns to cure....other reasons can be faulty memory sticks and voltage spikes from your home mains supply....fridges can cause this :)....Another reason for random shut downs can be a on-its-way-out power supply.....these are fitted inside the tower and can be replaced when total failure occurs for 20-30 quid :)....

Thats exactly what ours was doing- and cleaning it out solved the problem. Get to it asap though as if it carries on it could cause damage

can anyone tell me why all of a sudden a photo will have coloured pixelation all over it then they can just go? they always start at the bottom of the photo and stop showing some of the photo at the top. it's done it quite a few times now.
it has done it to a photo that i have on my own site. i had sent said photo to dawnie and it was fine. went to send it to someone else and it has the pixilation. i had thought that as it's not part of the original photo that it wouldn't show if i put it in the pm but it does.
whips

Hi smile ...
It sounds like the problem could be an internet one....sometimes file transfer can cause this due to pic not bein sent correctly and random data bein lost....try emailin pics in future and on your site just keep updatin the pic....also the size of the pic counts if it has been altered apparently (just read that on the interweb).....if you are usin dreamweaver for your site for example then make sure the photo in the parent directory (the site stored on your pc) is ok....hope this helps....not really my field....
Maybe someone else could chip in here :)
Cheers Gary xxx
Having a prob with dropping connection every time the phone rings ,have put all new filters on and have it going from the phone line to PC any ideas please

Hi smile...
If this was my prob I would remove everything and experiment :) .....all filters and phones the lot....then try a phone in every point (not the dect one -an ordinary that you know works :) ) without filters to confirm your phone points are ok....then add all your filters and go round and repeat....to verify filters all workin.....this will be some really silly fault when you discover it.....there seem to be issues with bt homehub doin this but thats down to bt....and you need to see them if you are havin probs with that....
Feel free to chip in anyone if you have a better idea than me :)....

Hi smile ..
Was this workin originally? Have you changed anything recently or started using a phone extension or something? You need to remove everything and just plug one filter and the pc in...and try to narrow down the prob....if you are sure all your kit is workin then maybe the fault is at the exchange and could be your isps responsability....very hard to fix via this forum and not hands on so to speak....Hope you sort it soon...
