Ok, Minx needs help again confused
I have a new pc and I need to network it, I have run the network connection wizard on both, used the XP disc to try and transfer files but neither PC can see the other.
I am using a netlink (usb to usb) cable to connect the PCs to each other, I have enabled internet connection sharing, I have a standard plug in the wall BB connection. I know I have to do something with the IP addresses, but as the slave has no connection at all I am stumped. I can configure the master but not the slave :?
I am getting the error message that 'a network cable is unplugged' but it isn't. I have run the network connection wizard and unplugged and re-plugged the cable in and out, shut down and restarted both machines, I have even googled it!!!
Any help would be appreciated!!!

I have connected the main pc to the lappy before using the same cable, they just share the internet connection then smile It's basically just to transfer some stuff I can't burn.

I was going to mention something like that, honest... though for the life of me I couldnt remember the name *ethernet*... like a phone plug on each end innit?... and a thicker cable...
I have one here... a faster conection or somesuch
>good grief lp... steer clear of techie threads... you know it makes sence!<

Thanks Ukwineman hun, I have checked all the obvious stuff-I know it is something to do with configuring the IP adresses but while the slave has no connection I can't configure anything sad
why not just temp use the ethernet cable you use to connect to you router for internet if its just to transfer files the switch back ?
I hardly perv at all... no, really!

Hmm, It is rather late, and my heads full of other stuff at the moment, but I’m pretty sure that if you are using a USB cable you have to configure your connection as a “direct cable connection” as opposed to a network connection.
I’m sure that a direct connection (p2p) will still permit internet sharing dunno
If you want to create a home network you will need some form of hub / router and a few feet of Ethernet Cable. I think
redface this is quite embarrassing as I have 4 computers networked here at the moment with room for another 6, and it’s not that long ago that I set it all up ffs
Oh well :dunno:
Like I said, its late rolleyes
I’ll try and remember how it all works tomorrow hunni kiss

Thanks hun, I have tried that method to no avail. I have definately previously created a network using this cable, it's deffo something to do with IP addresses that I am missing sad
Trying putting the IP of the computer connected to the internet into the default gateway setting of the 2nd computer. It's too late in the evening for techy problems  lol

The only sensible way to network computers is via ethernet as ethernet is designed for this sole purpose and the hardware is ubiquitous and cheap. If you just wish to conect 2 PCs together you need an 'ethernet crossover cable' or a straight thru ethernet cable and a crossover adaptor, or the more sensible way, 2 straight ethernet cables and little box with flashing lights on commonly known as a network hub. 4 port hubs cost next to nothing to purchase. You can then add more PCs as time goes on. Most people on broadband have a broadband router and most have a 4 port hub built in and therefore have 4 ethernet sockets at the back so in this case all you would need would be some ethernet cables off ebay, not PCw$rld.
BTW there are millions of pages devoted to setting up home networks on the Internet for you to consult! biggrin
