Techy monitor query?

I have a Mac monitor, kinda looks like an iMac in style with a G4 tower. Anyhoooo recently the colour has been flickering and going very yellow, I've called a Mac shop and they said they'd 'have a look at it' for £50... not actually fix it just 'look at it' and assess how much more to charge me!
What I'm wondering is... is it definitely the screen or a hard drive error? I'm prepared to buy a nice new one IF it's definitely the screen... it is 5 years old afterall.
I've tried recalibrating it and doesn't make any difference... is it just dying on me?
Ta ever so!
I'm no expert but it sounds like as you are getting a colorcast that one of the guns has gone in the tube. I had a similar problem with a T V. It may mean a new tube so better a new monitor.
goose35 is right, sounds like one of your guns just might be on its way out.
Or because you said its flickering, it could be just a resister brake down, if thats the case, anyone with a bit of basic knowledge of electronics could find it and replace it within a short time.
For them to replace a gun could cost you a bit plus the initial £50
If you don't know anyone that could fix it for you for reasonably cheap I would just think about buying a new monitor as there not that expensive nowdays plus you will get a guarantee with it.
Tony wink
As I am a PC user and not a Mac user, I will try and offer soom help that should be the same smile
It could be the monitor, but I would try changing the cable that connects the monitor to your computer. It could also be the graphics card in your Mac.
Other than that I am stumped.
Thanks guys :rose: kiss
It's stopped flickering and now just washed in a sea of yellow!
I think for all the faffing about I might aswell get a new screen... seen a rather swish 20" flat screen that's not too bad in price.
Just wanted to know if it was the monitor or not really! I work on the Mac all day every day but if I have to lift the bonnet I haven't a clue!
cool
Thanks Andy but the lead from the monitor is connected right into it and can't be unplugged, but mentioning graphics cards makes me nervous!!
Monitor or not... monitor or not...?
Its worth un-plugging any cables from/to the monitor.... then plug them back in.
Sometimes if the cable/plug isnt making a good contact it fails to recieve one or more signal and over time the conectors will oxidise a bit causing lack of a good signal.
A harddrive wouldnt cause this problem.... however a failing graphic card could so it may not be the monitor, although the monitor or cable is the most likely area of fault.
Also it might be worth opening the case and giving any cards a gentle wiggle/push to make sure they are seated correctly on to the motherboard.
While very unlikely..... make sure you're not putting a mobile phone close to the monitor or cable!
Errrrm.... if the monitor has any little knobs on the back give them a gentle wiggle as sometimes they oxidise as well.... it might also be worth "degausing" the monitor (although unlikely) which the manual should explain how to, or is one of the options that comes up when you hit the menu button on the front.

Yes I also like to get down and dirty inside a computer too lol
If you are not comfortable going inside a computer and don't know anyone who will do it for free or low cost, then as you say it is probably an ideal time to get that monitor you have got your eyes on smile
Good tips Jon, I'll have a jiggle of some knobs! I'm good at jiggling. lol

Hi Dolly, before splashing out on a new one, if you know a TV repair man/woman they should be able to fix is as BikerST and I believe it is your monitor that is failing and not your actual MAC.
TV repair man is not just someone who dresses in womens clothes lol
Thank you Little Witch cool
