I have just had a phone call. East European accent. She told me the UK Government had over charges me and I was due Then she asked for bank account details.
So I ask where is she from. The phone went silent, then something said to another person and the phone went dead.
Looks like I am not getting my refund.
That's ok, the Halifax has sent me an email, telling me my account has been accessed by others, and I need to contact them with my details...................
I don't have ANY sort of accounts with the Halifax.

Sarah,
they'll only send another one.
So, if using Microsoft Outlook, next time they send one
- open it
- look on menu bar at the top of the message for "Block Sender"
- click it
This will make Outlook look at all future emails from the same sender and 'bin it' for you.

Have a look at http://www.swingingheaven.co.uk/swingers-forum/viewtopic/397869.html , in particular the 6th posting covering Telephone Preference Service =
It might help
There are loads doing the rounds. Two recent ones are an e-mail claiming to be from the Inland Revenue saying that you are due a refund on tax paid. Please provide details!!!!!
And a phone call claiming to be from BT or telephone provider saying that they have the power to cut you off immediately if outstanding balance of £XX is not paid. You try to ring back and find that you can't. This is because the caller is expecting you to do this and has not terminated the incoming call. They call back a few minutes later to say "there you are, I told you so". Some may get caught by it.
Smooth2
This week I have had several emails from 'HSBC' asking me to verify my account,I don't have one! Today I got an IDENTICALLY WORDED email claiming to be from Paypal (where I do have an account),but still not falling for it.
The other one I've been getting lately is a phone call from someone claiming that my computer has been sending reports to Microsoft that it is infected and I need to go onto their website to download some security software to save my data.
Yeah right!!
Had the same sort of phone call. He said that my computer was infected and if I sit at it he will talk me through the remedy! And I was born yesterday. Told him I didn't have a computer, it all went very quiet.

or just randomly make up a bank account number and sort code and send it to them- should waste a bit of their time innocent
a lot of the time these emails are sent to see if the email account is active, and if you reply with anything they pass your details on to oher spammers and you end up with even more cons

If these spam emails are replied to, whether genuinely, or to waste their time, it tells the sender that the email account is live and active, and more emails follow.

Yeah right!!

You wouldn't happen to be with Talk-Talk would you? I've heard of three people who've had exactly the same thing happen to them... and they're all fairly new Talk-Talk customers. Coincidence? You decide. ;-)

Nope, a long time AOL (I know, but it's free!) customer, though I believe they are the same company these days.
I also had this call at work which is a BT broadband customer and manged to waste several minutes of his and my time pretending to do whatever he said until I told him the PC I was using didn't actually have an internet connection!

Okay... that rules that theory out then. smile
Is it illegal to blow an air horn or policemen's whistle down a phone line?

I've had one of those claiming they were calling from a Microsoft support Centre in South London - they even gave me a number on which I could call them back to check them out if I wanted to. I advised them that there is no way that I would have given Microsoft my phone number and that I would have to consider reporting them to the police. He still insisted it was genuine. In the end I just hung up. I have googled the number and nothing comes up in connection with Microsoft.
Same with the people I know, except the Indian sounding person said they were calling from Microsoft in New York. The callback number was somewhere like Birmingham, but when you rang it, after a lot of clicking (I presume re-routing) an answering machine asked you to leave your number so someone can call you back.

Thats why its useful to have a account just for shite, use the delete all and block all buttons wink
Luckily for me I know how to block all my accounts so no one can access them. I tell you what, I am such a good guy if you send me all your bank details I will block yours from them too...... honest!
I use Incredimail, it's free and has a useful button... To bounce the email back to sender, this gives the impression that the email was undeliverable, as the email address does not exist. Had a few such emails in the past, but now not had one for months.

I had the same one and do have a Halifax account.....when clicked on it..it was an exact perfect copy of the halifax site. It asked me to log in....and should I have tried would ofcause have recorded my password and suchlike. Thankfully I was a suspicious and rang Halifax first and they confirmed, it was not from them. I forwarded it to the on line fraud section they have, and as a precaution changed my password. Have to have your wits about you as these things can be such perfect copies of the real site.
I regularly get emails from HSBC, Alliance & Lester, Halifax etc and yet I have accounts with none of them. Usually the spam filter has corralled them for me.
I don't open them & just report them as phishing scams.

One of the easiest ways to weed out the fakes is if they say 'Dear Customer' or something generic. Remember, your bank knows your name and they like to make all contact personal
My new favorite is the guys that call from India and say "Hi this is John calling from ******" I say "Hi John I'm Ratash how are you" biggrin
We had a call telling us that apparently we had a windows error .... I said I'd check made him wait for a couple of minutes then explained that though the living room one was open that was deliberate...he then explained that he'd meant my P.C. .... I apologised what an idiot I was....of course he meant Windows not windows .... he laughed 'that's ok easy mistake don't worry' and offered to talk me through the problem .... I struggled for some time to get my P.C. to load,he was very patient.... he asked what I saw on the boot screen ..... I said ubuntu and hung up
