I've just watched the first in this 2 part special and made me think about why celebs who do this kind of documentary and how the public perceives them.
Now, I will hold my hand up and admit to being a Discworld anorak ( or Ankh-orak as we're more affectionately known! and yes I have ALL the novels plus a few extra ones, I have the coat of arms of Ankh Morpork, I've collected the figurines in the past, seen the films etc etc ) so when I heard the news that Pratchett was diagnosed with Alzheimers I was stunned and quite upset. The programme though, didn't seem to be done in a way to gain public sympathy ( although that goes without saying ) but more of his way of bringing public attention to a dreadful and cruel disease.
Now, think back to the case of the late Jade Goody. Without this turning into a rock throwing contest, why do I see her programmes about her last weeks in a totally different light? Is it because some people use their fame to bring the public's attention to their illness whilst others use it for sympathy? Do I think this way because I'm a fan of Pratchett's but thought Jade was a talentless non-entity? I found Living With Alzheimers to be very informative and encouraging while hers was more like watching a car crash.
What do you think?
