Did anyone watch.."That'll teach you. "
It brings a group of teenagers together for 4 weeks in a school which goes back to the 1960s, with all the old teachings and strict rules. Out goes political correctness...... biggrin :D :D Yippppee !!!
unfortunatley i can remember being in school in the 60 s smackbottom maybe thats why i like a little spanking so much redface
We watched it. thought it was worrying if it works because it might promote going back to the "bark at the children" approach to learning which he disagrees with.
He has the opinon that you can't force the children to learn and shouting is hardly going to encourage them to make more effort in class.
I watched this program aswell.
What a shock some of these kids had!!!
I am only 35 but think that our schools are to soft!
What i found a worry was....the government want 50% of kids to get a degree...ok you say!
But how about the two girls from London, they didn't even know where London was on the map. Now by the above figures one of these will get a degree!!!!!!!
Bring back the cane and chuck out all this PC crap.
I look forward to seeing how they all get on!

The good old days?
Anyone on here ever remember what happened if you called the teacher a wanker in those times? It was rough and tough and we had no escape. I commend the idea, but think selective choices of those involved at least understanding what was to come, and to find those who would try to live the ideals would have been better. But they always choose the rebel, the cop out, the anti this ones, and in the end it is so easy to just return to the modern way, with a little bit of effort. How much we wanted to hide, to leave and to get out was fixed by the era. Every generation gets the old ' It was harder in my time', routine, but then it is just as hard today, but in ways we just dont see sometimes?

Sixties style corporal punishment has left me with a total aversion to being spanked
I watched it and had to laugh at the way the kids attitudes didn't just give a fuck to what the teacher was saying all due to the fact they know whats the worse that can happen?? well we can't get caned no more!!!
I did like the idea of teaching the kids the practical skills such as basic bricklaying etc was a good idea and wish they would adopt that attitude today!
In fact I think they need to review the syllabus they teach the kids and get companies such as gas, elec, water and tel bills to be formatted the same teach the kids the value of money and where it all goes etc and ten they understand better for their adult lives the fact that you can't just sit and expect the world to lend you the hand all the time!
and that is my report sat here watching the world go by wishing they would tidy my front room and kitchen cos I cant be arsed!

Thanx for the compliment, Moonowls. In this case flattery definitely will get you everything :bounce:
I didn't watch the show, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to imagine the message (if any) they were trying to get across. I also, have many opinions.
The one I feel most strongly about is the use of corporal punishment in our school systems and how a lot of people from my generation and previous, feel we should bring it back.
Now, before anyone assumes my feelings originate from being an overprotective mother in the 21 century, I would have to say you are partially correct, but I also speak as a social worker, working with damaged teenagers in the educational field. So I can look at the system, from both sides of the fence. On a daily basis, I am forced to physically restrain teenage boys. Either to prevent them from hurting others or hurting themselves. I hate it. I also know the degradation and humiliation they feel.
Corporal punishment, is just wrong! It is a pretty term for assault and a fancy way of actually physically hurting a child and getting around the law. Of course, I will hear the arguments 'It didn't hurt me when i was at school' or 'schools are too soft' but these laws are here for a reason. To protect the rights of children.
Caning a child is causing bodily harm and is demeaning. Would we in any other circumstance accept such punishment from another person? Someone twice our body weight? Someone with the strength to cut our skin with a bit of cane? If it were to be brought back, where do you draw the line? Should it be introduced in prisons? If we were caught speeding, would WE find it to be an acceptable punishment? I tell you this, ANYONE who harms my kids in such a way, would bear the scars of his actions for a life time.
What are we teaching them, if caning was to be brought back? That it IS ok to strike another person. It may be acceptable in other societies, but hitting someone, is against the law and I am grateful for that. Caning a child is a cop out and a way of saying that an adult has lost control or really cant be arsed with trying to resolved the matter, or trying to get to the root of the problem.
The process of disciplining our children starts at home. Its our responsibility as parents to make sure we set good examples, to work with schools, when our children misbehave and NOT to be afraid to ask for help when issues are presented to us that are out of our depth. Parents aren't perfect. We're humans as well, and without fail, will make poor judgements while trying to teach our children how to survive in this world. But it is our responsibility, when deciding to have a child to do the best that we can, for the rest of our lives.
Too many parents find (and Hell, i've been guilty of this just as much as the next person) that a computer, or a PS2 or a video makes a suitable companion for our children for hours on end. What in fact, is happening, is that our children are losing valuable time in human interaction. I ALWAYS make sure, my children and I sit around and just talk. It was something I started when they uttered their first words and now my children and I have some of the most in-depth conversations possible of a mother and her 8 and 10 year olds. My children then know how to talk to other people. Sure I will accept that there will be times when they have done something socially irresponsible, but because I have already built that bridge, the problem is half tackled.
Of course, we also have to accept that our children could possibly have some physical or mental difficulty dealing with school, or the ability to learn. It, once again is our responsibility as parents to seek out the best way to educate our children.
If a child doesn't know the basic educational requirements that he/she must have for his year, blame the school! Get a hold of the teacher responsible and find out why the fuck your child doesn't know where London is! Then, sit down with a map and show him yourself!
Anyway, I'm off on one here and somehow made myself sound out to be the perfect parent, which I am FAR from. I'm sorry if I have offended anyone with this, as it wasn't my intention.
Silky xx
Only thing corporal punishment did for me was to make me so scared of my teacher I was too afraid to ask to go to the toilet, so I pee`d myself in front of the entire class. I was about eight or nine redface surprisedops:
