Of course we've been visited before. Where did the ancient Egyptians come from and why did they walk funny? Wasn't Elijah carried up into the sky in a flaming chariot?
We are a fairly large but inconsequential experiment being conducted by the species called Germinators of Dogging (God for short). They've given us the code of ethics and the code of dogging and they're waiting to see which way we choose. If we choose right we get to stay in the carpark of Elysium - if we choose wrong we get to talk to Mary Whitehouse for ever and a day!

I once asked Patrick Moore the much the same question and the answer was "well we just don't know ! " The distant universe as we see it is what it was maybe billions of years ago as the light traveling can take thus long to reach us and light being the fastest thing we know (4.5 years to the nearest star) means that if there is life on other planets that we are aware of then we will not know if it still is ! The Andromeda galaxy that we know of is so far away that nobody can say that it still exists ! or come to that if the whole universe that we know of ceased Now ! we will not see it for a few billion years !
The shere vastness of space would suggest that somwhere a similar chain of events has created life but as a trecki would say " its life Jim but not as we know it !" or if it is then their techonolgy would be so far advanced from ours we simply would not comprehend it and if that "people" could cover the vastness of space and find us then the question would be why come here ? when there are better places to go !
If that alien race were looking at us right now, they would be looking at a pre earth ! and what we are now will not be "seen" to them for a few billion of our earth years by which time there may be no earth !
