I was discussing this with another forumite a while back- and it's come to the fore in the news this morning.
I'm disgusted at the publishing of a photo of the "Hanna Montana" girl semi-naked, in a very sexual, provocative pose. She's 15.
Girls as young as five are targeted to buy dolls dressed like prostitutes. Bratz are a personal point of hatred for me. As a mum of four daughters, I despise the fact that there are dolls on the market- and all the associated marketing hype- encouraging young girls to aspire to dress like tarts.
I've seen fishnet tights for 7 year olds. Look at any high street and you'll see eight & nine year olds wearing make up & mini skirts.
14 year old girls are performing live strip shows on webcam for strangers - and thinking it's "normal - everyones doing it"
Am I alone in despairing as to where this will all end? Who do you think should take responsibility?
I have more to rant about on this one- around the spiraling aspirations that put so much pressure on youngsters, but I need to formulate my thoughts.

I have 6 year old Grandaughter who likes the Bratzs. I do not know too much about them if honest. lol
What I would say is that society is playing a dangerous game with our youth. The magazines nowadays aimed at young teenagers on how to give oral sex, or the best 25 sexual positions. Girls of 11 and over are reading this and parents in general just " turn a blind eye " to it.
We had the topic a while ago on here about the age very young kids are being taught about sex, and this subject is a continuation of that early teaching of it. Girls in particular are thrust into a world of sex and dressing up to look older. The make up and the clothes that are available to girls even under 10, is frightening.
Most kids want to be older than they are for many reasons but as adults do we really have to activly encourage it? I know I am going down the " parents fault " road but...most of the time these young girls are out with a parent dressed way too old for their years. No doubt I will now be labelled an old fogey, and need to be more " hip hop ". Anyone for tennis?
I object strongly to the sexualisation of our young people. Also the adult slogans on T-shirts.
I do not allow my son to wear t-shirts with derogatory sayings on them... normally they are given to him by his dad and mum. eg. 'I was born Lazy'. 'Do I look like I give a fuck?' 'sex instructor- first lesson free' I even ban all derivatives of the FCUK crap. I have explained the reasons why. He accepts that and I supply him with alternatives.
I have told him that with everything he chooses his audience when using contentious language. With a t-shirt he has no control over his audience and he really should care that he always portrays himself positively. The same with inappropriate language when he can be overheard.
If I were to have a young daughter I would approach the situation in much the same way.
This is a big soap box of mine and I am being careful to :gagged:
Winch I am totally with you on this, I am sickened by some of the sights of young girls I see. School disco’s at primary schools where the children have mini skirts make up and high heels. What is the world coming to?
It is adult buyers for shops that give the ok to stock such items.
I say bring back Mary Whitehouse like her or loathe her at least she stood up and spoke out. All our children wouldn’t be subjected to such things on telly if she was still here.
I have a daughter and there is no way I would let her go out of the house looking like a make up Barbie doll. Battle or no battle, I explain to her she can have what she wants when she earns the money to pay for it herself, still within reason mind you.
We as adults/ parents should make the choices for our Children, I give my daughter the choice out of three pairs of shoes I have selected for her. That’s the choice she gets and is happy with that, because that’s the way it has always been.
What are we doing to our youth?
Let children be children!
Totally agree with you winch. It scares me just how "grown up" young children are becoming.
My eldest is 4 and I like minx give her a selected choice of which shoes or clothes she wears or I buy. Im the parent and I will not be dictated to by my child, nor will I give in to but so in so has those.
I think alot of the responsibility comes down to the parents to "police" what their children wear but some must lie with the retailers who put what I see as inappropriate clothing/ footwear into the shops.

My daughter is 11 now she has a twin brother and I have a 17 year old boy. My 17 year old will buy his own clothes now, but i have used the same technique with all my children and yes it has been with clothes to. I feel you start the way you mean to go on, they still feel they have some choice.
But total choice comes when they pay for their own clothes.
I totally agree with all of the above, but then again, I wonder did our parents says the same about us when we were kids for the way we dressed altho it maybe wasn't provacative in our eyes, it might have made them cringe!
If I had kids there is no way I would let them dress like I see other children dress but then again would they go against my wishes and take a change of clothes out with them and change when I am not there?
So that "they fit in" Hopefully not confused
i work for a big youth organisation, there are times, ie discos, parties and even youth club nights, where we have sent young girls home, because of what they are wearing.
we also see lots of problems with young girls sexuality, to give advice to a 11yr girl who is in active sexual relationship is not uncommon and we have arranged an abortion for a 13yr old.
Is the problem the girls fault, maybe, but society surely has a lot to answer for this as well, ie the teen mags, clothes shops, etc
We have had young people tell us they experient because of being taught sex education at a younger age, is this true, I don't know.
There is also a degree of generation, ie my mum had me at 15, so I'm gonna kids at 14 sort of thing. Don't know the answer to this one.
My view lock the kids up until there 21 lol
if kids want to see adult material they will.
Most top selling computer games are full of it, newsagents are all too help to sell dirty magazines to the under age and you just look at some of the topics in publications aimed at 12+.
At the end of the day sex, drugs, violence sells and no one gives a shit.
Fuck you pay me!. thats the world today.
My daughter had bratz dolls and they only thing that pissed me off was the price. I tend to let my children do as they want and hope that the education I have given them is sufficient for them to make the right decisions.....so far they haven't let me down.........
I remember my daughter at the age of 8 yrs rolling around her bed with her teddy. I asked her what she was doing and she said she was "sexing". After asking what she meant she said "like they do in Eastenders"! now everyone knows that's on at , the media has a lot to pay for.
As for magazines I've heard just lately that "SUGAR" magazine aimed at 13yr olds approx totally forbids topics on dieting! a big step forward me thinks!
Woohoo hit the nail on the head with "so that they fit in", my daughter's life is dictated by "everyone else does it, why can' I?".
For years I've controlled what she wore and how she left this house, now at 16 yrs old I cannot control her taste in clothing luckily she's into shorts with thick tights and heels (yes I know horrible combination but they're allwearing them! rolleyes )
As for MSN and camming if any of you have a teenage daughter the next time they're online check out their mates' profile pics, you'll be astonished! I was, they're all and I mean all visually about 2-3 years older than their true age.
It scares the living daylights out of me because I cannot keep an eye on a 16 year old 24/7 24 hours a day
