Anyone else getting excited because its nearly that time of year again??????/
No...... not bloody Christmas........ lol
The Dakar Rally...... starts on New Years' Eve in Lisbon this year.... and finishes in Dakar on the 16th January.....
Its a real shame that my hero Meoni died on the course during this years' Dakar.... he will be missed.... but all those privateers who take part completely on their own deserve some praise. They compete all day and then fix their bikes at night... sleeping as and when they can.
The cars are to die for..... the Mitsubishi Evo is one hell of a car......
The trucks.... omg... how scary are they????????
Come New Years' Eve.... i know where i shall be.... glued to Eurosport... watching the most exciting Rally on the planet....... anyone else going to be doing that too?????? I was offered the chance to follow the Rally for real, but have had to decline... too many logistical problems to overcome.....

it's a shame it costs so much to enter and run support staff, cos i would love to have a go at this.
have sky planned extensive coverage ?
Well beings I'm somebody who had the unfortunate luck of having to grow up (I had no choice I was his son rolleyes ) with a rallye driver who went up against the worlds finest in the very late 50's to the mid 60's no I don't find the Pari-Dak very special, as I don't with most of the worlds finest "motor sportsmen" these days (lets face it when was the last time they had to drive through the day....... then the night...... then the next day.. ad infinitum....... and oh by the way in those days it was a case of if it breaks you fix it without changing anything major! hey rallye drivers of those days dicovered "speed" long before the rest of us did in the late 60's and early 70's ! and as for F1 drivers...... lets not go there !!!
Yes I am well aware that the Pari-Dak has claimed a good few lives in it's existence but I am sorry I don't find it special
Why not look at this

By the way......... I want to do this in 2007, and I will be looking for sponsership ......... so am I just going to piss you lot off with requests for money lol
Mike
the difference is you grew up with it so it's lost it's appeal to you.
some of us would gladlysit down with an old pro and talk about the good old days.
34fun.......... I suspect that your post may have been in response to my one (above you)
I will first of all say ...... to all the peeps that read this thread, sorry I am having a bad day and I don't want to piss anybody off cos I have lost the plot today (is this one of these posts that will haunt me forever lol) and a very special sorry to equie-princess cos I think it is your post I have just hijacked! so please ignore everything this sad old git has just posted............. except
I am serious about the marathon-des-sables smile
The dakar is a great rally for sure.
I just find it a shame when someone dismisses all other motorsport for 1 event!

I have only been following the Dakar for the last 5 years.... but omg... i watch the re-runs of it over and over....... i must admit i cried when Meoni died this year.....
The challenge faced by the teams and privateers alike are enormous... and just because you're famous, doesn't mean you won't be claimed by the desert. It would be such a priviledge to take part.... but i don't think my horse would fit in the car boot.... lol

Agreed but that is normally because that person prefers that particular genre of the sport....
Steve and I are very involved in Hillclimbing but that doesn't mean that we dont watch other forms of motor sport... In fact Steve is watching the Moto GP as I type...

The Dakar Rally......

Surely the "the" is superfluous - isn't it called Da Kar Rally? rolleyes
Hey! Let's start a rally that tears throught the countryside of England not giving a monkies for any livestock or ( if there are no witnesses) the local inhabitants... it'll be great!
I can see it now..... loads of boy racers charging through the lanes of rural England with the local folk scattering out of their way... and even better... they get on the TV...
I think it a bit obscene.

yeah, but that is in "off road country" with anyone likely to stray onto the roads kept well away. Get to Africa and the loss of a goat/ cow etc isn't comaprable to the loss of a sheep in Wales. It means poverty for people. Thats without the idea of charging through peoples villages and land with a vehicle you are sure to wreck, which is more than the lifetimes income of anyone local they'd see that day....
BTW, I like watching rallying on TV. Just don't think the Dakar is right.
Another event that I can't watch, due to the totally imbecillic comentary from Eurosport... deadpanning things like: "There's a red car, going over a sand dune, and now it's coming up to another one, and yes, it's gone over it. Here's a bike rider, isn't he going fast? It's quite dusty out there, and hot. Here's a truck. It goes fast too. Look at the dust it's throwing up. See Spot Run. Run spot Run."
I gave up on the whole channel when they covered Le Mans without ever showing a leaderboard, or mentioning what happened to cars that stopped in the hours they were off air. It was incredibly frustrating to be interrupted by a repeat of 1973 pro-am tiddlywinks, then to watch a panoz pootling round for 3 laps before being told he was 7th, then watching the 4th place for a bit, and by the end of the hour gradually piecing together that the leader from before wasn't in the top 10 unless he was 8th, and had therefore probably retired. Oh, and mixing up the concepts of '2nd place' and '2nd place in the group of 2 Type X cars that are 10% slower than anyone else and in their own race' didn't help either.

They haven't called it the Paris-Dakar for a few years now, because it starts in different places each year. Last year was Spain..... this year Portugal...... and, yes, i would have loved to be there for the first couple of stages..... but unfortunately.... work, horses, etc make it impossible.

Postie....... you could be flattened by a car just walking around wherever you live..... the locals are warned well in advance of the Rally. They actually welcome it, as it brings much needed income for the local community. Also if anything, animal, vegetable, or mineral is injured or damaged..... compensation is paid at its fullest. So, as for it being 'obscene'..... i can think of many things more worthy of that epitaph than the Dakar Rally.

The Dakar is a rally I watch each year mainly because my mate is always there. He builds the Mitsubishis. He used to build the WRC cars which are made in Rugby but then he transferred to the Rally raid cars.
i love rallying but havent competed for five years now. However I recently bought a new rally car and I am going to make my return on the British open championship next year.
Im going to do my first event on a single venue stage rally in two weeks time and Im well exited lol
hey equi
if you like the idea of motorsport but not the cost....there is a race from the uk to italy involving some of the best scenary in the world and some of the best roads....and everyone drives cars that cost less than £200.
you spend the evenings partying in hotels, just like the real gumball rally.....just cheaper.
two of my mates did it last year and it was a total giggle. (and they are in a passat)
Im Meaty and im a Motorsport addict

Yes im an addict, do i want to give up?, do i bolox

lol Same here meaty.... Meeting Jenson Button this year and having our photo taken with him was the highlight for me.... Also met Olivier Panis, Pedro De La Rosa, Colin McRea (very briefly) Murrey Walker, Andy Prilaux to name a few.... I could also mention many famous Hillclimb drivers, but I doubt many of you will have heard of them  We also have friends who work for BAR and Renault F1 teams...
Steve has met many more than me but that's because he is a marshal....
Ah yes definately motor sport addicts in this house.... wink
