so i guess the Falklands War wasn't a conspiracy to get Thatcher cemented in history?

you also fail to mention that the Falkland Islanders who have lived on thise islands for many generations who are adamntly opposed to being forced under Argentinian control. You also fail to mention that the Argentinian government has even refused the offer of shipping home the bodies of the deceased soldiers so that they can be put to rest near their families. The same Argentinian government that refuses to allow flights to or from the islands so the families can even visit their graves there.

Britain had been trying to give the Falklands to Argentina but there was a sticking point.......the Kelpers did not want to be Argentinian. So we were lumbered with the place.
The Argentinians have a war cemetary on the island. I think most nations used to bury their dead where they fall.......so I am not surprised that they do not fly them back home.
I saw a plane arrive in the Falklands in 1991 that carried the relatives of the Argentinians. So some have been to see their loved ones graves. Unless the Argentinian Government has only recently stopped them coming over

I apologise if some of my information was incorrect. To my knowledge that flight did not take off from Argentina .. did it not come on a LAN flight from somewhere else (not sure though). Currently the only way to get to the Flaklands is cruise ship, LAN flight or MOD flight from Brize Norton. Trust me, I am going there in December and it has been hell making the travel plans.
Yes, I agree most do bury dead where they fall (not literally mind) but the Argentinian government has even refused to come to the Falklands (a country they claim is theirs still) to consecrate that said cemetary because they will have to show a passport when they land. Hell, I hold a british passport and I still have to show my passport to go there. It almost seems like a political move to leave the dead there so they can complain about it but yet reject all offers of a mutually satisfying solution.
Can I say this has been a very informative thread and its good to see debate. Falkland war, like every war is written by historians and people who took part and they will give their own informed views. We all however have to eventually come to our own conclusions based upon our own beliefs and knowledge.

Sorry, missed this part.
That's a little harsh to say 'lumbered with the place'
What if Britain decided to give the Isle of Wight to the French and those living there objected? Should we give it away anyway or just be 'lumbered' with it?
Thanks for the discussion Dave wave
Just one more thing and then I will shut up. lol.
One thing that I think the FIG (Falklands Islands Government) insists on when you go there is that you have to prove you have accomodation set up (renting, hotel booking etc) and that you have enough money to sustain your visit. What a wonderful rule.

That was how the government viewed it at the time. They were paying x amount in UK tax payers money to keep a force present and they were looking for a get out clause. The Kelpers just didn't want to be a colony of Argentina.
The Agentinians claim was the Papal Bull of the 1400 ish on how the New World was to be divided up. The British claim was that we had people living there. The UN tried to broker a deal in the 60's as they wanted an end to colonialisation.........but handing the Kelpers over to the Argentinians was doing what the UN wanted to avoid......so hence lumbered with them lol
A bit like Wales being lumbered with England on its arse......like a pile   bolt

Gosh this is a heated debate to which I have very little of value to add, except that I think of all the Prime Ministers we've seen come and go, Maggie truly had the biggest balls!
Dont think its a heated debate really - its as Abeline says, a mature discussion where different views are aired, which is fine by me. The word argument was meant to be used originally to give different perspectives on things and is not the same as a row. I have no problem with the former smile
Now its settled down into several people giving informed accounts and knowledgable responses I am thoroughly enjoying reading this thread...
Its bringing to light a lot of stuff that back when the conflict took place I was of an age where it didnt really interest me I'm sorry to say..
It really is a wealth of information and its interesting to read about the history of your country is it not..

Oh i so agree with you on this Mallock - History is the key to the future through it we will find a better place to be. Sometimes its just a shame that the lessons are so painful and tragic dont you think?

I wholeheartedly agree that history is the key to the future. After all "lesson's learned" and all that. It is very easy for anyone (myself included) to say what should have been done, how they would have done it, what went wrong etc. However what we need to remember that being am armchair President/Prime Minister is a very easy job.
Thankyou for allowing me to hijack your thread with my drivel Lost.
