We have been bored to death at work by a guy who forever tells us that we do not read words but recognise the length and shape.

We read by recognising words and not by actually reading every word written. We recognise the shape and form of words, which is why it's so damn hard to read anything written in capital letters as we're not taught to recognise words in that form and we have to really think hard to get our way through it. Not only is it shouting, in netiquette, but it's really difficult to read.
So, we know what to expect from most words and can fill in most blanks ourselves - not very easy but just another skill we can master. Of course some words are easier to 'skim' than others but some cars are easier to drive than others too!!
