Hun can I take a pause on this as it is a sore point with me as well.
In the meantime look up the words to this song as sung by Stan Freeberg >> the song is "Old Man River" . This version dates back to the late 1950's (lol) long befor PC was heard of.
Phredd.
As Stan would say :-
"Your way ahead of me" lol

FFS it is now politically incorrect to say "nitty gritty" Why? Because the reference is to the nits and the grit that slaves used to be covered in when they came up from the lower decks. Now one of my best friends is black (am I allowed to say that?) rolleyes and can trace her history back to those times and even she thinks it's ridiculous. Someone, somewhere gets paid for thinking about the political correctness of words, phrases and sayings. I'm not saying that there aren't some I agree with but doesn't it go too far sometimes?

Who said that it's politically incorrect???

Dont know if this is the article Just googled it >>>>>>

Yes, but no citations... just scotch mist with no proof! No names of forces, no names of anyone... just 'banned by the police'. NOTHING concrete in there at all, Urban myths abound.
cool

Urban myths abound.

Nothing new there then, hmmm?
That articlle says
PC David Nixon, who advises Met officers on disciplinary matters, said there was no list of banned phrases, but officers could face a charge of breaching "tolerance" codes if anyone complained. "It is a subjective test."
The Met said yesterday that no officers had faced disciplinary charges for using nitty gritty or good egg, but confirmed it urged staff to "make sure the language they use would not cause offence."

I quite agree that sometimes the PC brigade go too far, but, on the other hand, sometime ignorant bigots (NOT HERE I hasten to add) take things too far too in continuing to use offensive language offensively. Same coin, different sides.

I went into the new Starbucks in Ipswich couple of months ago. Got to the counter and asked the lady for a black coffee. Simple you may think?
"Oh you mean coffee without milk" she says. "Er no. Black coffee please" I say.
"Coffee without milk?" she says. "Black coffee please" I reply.
"Its called coffee without milk" was the reply.
"Its without milk, cream , organic or otherwise, sugar, sweeteners or other additives. Black coffee if you would be so kind?" I say getting ever so slightly sarcastic.
"You can't call it black coffee" she instructed. Now coming from an 18 year old and me being somewhere beyond 50 I took offence at being instructed at how to use the Queen's English. (erm is that offensive to the Gay community now?). "I have been calling it black coffee since before you were a glint in your father's eye and I will continue so to do young lady. Now shove your political correct 'cafe sans lait' where the old beans go and good day"
Started to walk past the now very quiet queue that had built up during said exchange and two coloured / black / whatever (!) guys said " well done mate, this is all bullshit. where you going?"
So us three and a white / caucasian / whatever (!) couple all went down the street to Costa Coffee!
(Where I had a very enjoyable Latte Medio hehe)
Seems to me that a brigade of sandal wearing leftie liberal do gooders who would find no employment elsewhere have created an environment of fear where the words "You can't say ....." for fear of upsetting some phantasy sub section of society stops people and industries in their tracks. However it goes against the fundamental democratic right of anyone to speak entirely as they please wherever they please. If they offend someone then that is regrettable but that is the price of freedom.
It is very sad when we have reached the stage when a teacher (especially a male one) can't comfort a child with a cuddle for fear of being politically incorrect or even worse 'Assault'!.
I rest my case M'lud
PS I called myself 'British / English' in my census form . Got a very curt letter from 'them' saying I couldn't say that. So I wrote back and said if Paddy can call himself 'British / Irish, Jock can call himself British / Scots and Taffy can call himself British / Welsh then I will call myself British / English. I think my form was filed in the 'difficult' file...

Would it be more correct to call it African Coffee? .....or is that not PC. What if I called it South American Coffee? In South America coffee is drunk with no additives.

Whislt agreeing with the majority of your post, I would have to say that the bit I've quoted is where we difffer. Rather than if "being the price of freedom" - I would say it's crossing the line.
I still say the the majority, if not all "PC offence" is offered and suffered by people claiming to be offended "on behalf of those that ought to be offended"
btw - just so you know; I'm English and drink black coffee with cakeybun.

Perhaps where the Americano coffee comes from? Several coffee chains use this term for black coffee.
confused
.
As I drink Kenya coffee I will call it "Kahawa" from now on. That way I offend nobody.
Phredd
ps :- "Kahawa" is Swahili for coffee.

Pmsl rotflmao
Slight sidetrack.
On the way to a little munchette at the weekend, we stopped for petrol and a couple of coffees "to go"
HLB "A medium latte and a medium black coffee please"
Dude behind the counter "Would you like milk in your black coffee ?"
Me " :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: "
At work we can not refer to our clients as 'elderly' or 'old people' we have to call them 'older people'
The nature of the work makes it a minefield of things you can say or cannot say. I find I tend to use the terms wrinklies, old gits, mad woman and b******d a lot, much to my manager annoyance biggrin
SCOTCH = Items, articals and things.
SCOTS = People.
SCOTTISH = also people

What’s the big deal? Is it really about two little letters?

Exactly... but you are still going on about it. rolleyes
There are only 3 letters difference between Brit and Twat - but people are likely to be offended if you change them rolleyes
