ok, as a few people have pointed out, all our old "deleted" pm's have been put back into our inboxes.
this looks to most of us like they must have been kept somewhere,
for the sake of reasuring us, could someone please explain what is going on with them and the process of them being deleted (or not!!), as i for one am more than a bit concerned now!
there was the scare a cpl of weeks ago when people were worried others had access to their pm's, this is only going to make that all worse again!
this should be interesting.
i can't even find out how to get into my bloody PMs
i'm getting really annoyed now, can't find sod all and keep getting some daft error code every time i open/change a page mad
Knocks our name problem into a cocked hat.
Please Please Please put the site back to how it was on the 12/12/05. Error messages, cant find this, that and the other............................... AAAARRRRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
ok so i've found my PMs, please tell me i havn't got to delete them all one by one
what happened to the delete all post option?

well, if you don't like it you know where you can go :rascal: rotflmao
Of course the PM's don't really get deleted. They're to valuable. All youve got to do is set up a search of the PM database for telephone numbers, addresses etc and you can sell them.
Of course I wouldn't suspect that for a minute.

thats not very nice
I don't have to come here you know i get a better class of insult at work
so did anyone find the delete all button on the Pms? dunno
The PM's that are now back in my inbox seem to be quite random. If all the PM's that have been deleted before are back in then I'm missing a lot of them. Must of happened during migration.
This message is just really to check to see if
a) my avatar is on view (aka mals bum)
b) my signature is on view.
Noticed the radio buttons when setting up your forum settings are a bit off, you can't have both your signature and your avatar selected to 'yes'.
I've my fingers crossed that things will be all ok after the migration and bugs found. If you want any error testers just give me a pm/shout/tap on my shoulder.
I will leave this thread open - because it is a separate and specific issue about PMs, and not about site changes.

Hahaha U know I'm only joking hun........... this place wouldn't be the same without you
PM's are stored in the mysql database. When you delete them, basically they are made invisible, but kept in the database.
Only Admins with DB access can view them in the stored sql form. Some forum software also encrypts the message, so they cannot be read in the database anyhow.
You'd need to be able to log into the sql database, so not viewable to all and sundry.
This is nothing untowards, and is standard with almost all forum/bulletin softwares.
Sometimes, when a back-up of the database is restored, as is probably the case here where the forum has been updated, then it is possible for those messages to re-appear in your pm box.
I am webmaster/site owner for several forums, so am well aquainted with this.

I dont know much about how forums work but its probably cos fabio had to reregister (like everybody else) and you pm'd before he did that. I'll bet if you try again now, be'll get it (well hopefully...).

so you're also saying some forum software doesn't encrypt them, so admins can read them? i'd personally like to know if the scrambling thingie has been removed, cos i KNOW mark couldn't read 'em?dunno
my pm inbox and savebox has gone bloody bonkers! i have pm's now appearing from 18 months ago in my inbox, but the stuff i want to find in what was my savebox is nowhere to be seen. surely the old system could have been kept? :dunno:

I think I've posted this before but this looks like the right place to post it again.
The original forum was built using phpbb, it allows pm's to be sent received etc.
All messages are saved, those that are deleted by users stay in the database but get a flag saying that they are deleted, this is the way that 100,000's of forums are run.
The data is there, it can't be got at unless the owner of the database spends a lot of time hacking phpbb to write new scripts that show these messages, some site owners probably do, with SH there's a lot of messages and to be frank we have better things to do.
We get forwarded pm's with complaints etc but thats about it.
The forum isn't running on phpbb anymore, its been rebuilt and the database merged with the photo ads database, we didn't want anyone to loose any messages so those that have been deleted in the past are now back, they are all there including those that were in the saved messages.
So now we need to build in a saved messages feature and bulk delete for those that you don't want.
When that is done I've no issue with sending the deleted ones into oblivion as they take up space and might slow down the database, but I don't want anyone contacting me saying that I should have read it before it was deleted.

what's a PM biggrin

Could be lots of things, at the moment, the image below this post says pm (personal message), but we have My Mailbox, which in may ways is simiilar, what was pm and still is on some parts and otherwise refered to Mail, when all is said and done are the same thing in concept..........
St3v will it be possible to have a tracking system in the new mail system? I ask because previously when sending out munch invites, it was useful to see who had picked up the pm and who hadn't etc, you could prove that someone had received the pm. With this system when you send "send" you have no way of proving that the person ever received it.

Very important for "no shows" that don't give a reason me thinks..... good point.

yep. i ain't being critical just for the sake of being critical, but what was so wrong with PHPBB and the old PM system that was so in need of change. we know how it works, and it has functions that serve a purpose? dunno
